Technical Support Staff are responsible for the safety and technical advancement of our maker community. Shop, Laboratory and Studio Technicians orient and initiate students, staff and faculty through a series of strategically scripted hands on instructional demonstrations aimed at providing a foundational overview of the safety, process, and material considerations related to that type of production. Thereafter, Technicians continue to support, supervise, and advise all bodies working in their respective areas; insuring that all activities adhere to Industry and Technical Support Services Standards.
Technical Support Staff are responsible for the general upkeep of the shop, lab or studio they perform in. This includes the general maintenance and basic repair of all equipment and tools associated with their space; the daily cleaning, daily organization and occasional minor renovation of the space.
Technical Support Staff should represent the department and their respective areas in a positive, customer service oriented manner. Users should be supported, respected and empowered; all while observing shop/lab/studio etiquette and general best practices.

Under the direction of a senior technician and/or manager, the Wood/Metal Shop Technician performs a variety of skilled work involving wood, metal, and other materials. The Technician operates machinery and general shop equipment and tools to provide instructional safety demonstrations, product fabrication assistance, and other forms of technical support for students and faculty. Other duties include maintenance of machine and overall shop cleanliness; inventorying of equipment/supplies; and adherence and enforcement of safety policies and protocols. This position reports directly to the Wood/Metal Shop Manager.
Location Los Angeles, CA (Westchester) Essential Duties Summary
  • Provides students and/or faculty with technical assistance and/or guidance in the operation of general machine shop equipment. Assists with mechanical and electrical machinery malfunctions.
  • Performs safety demonstrations and enforces proper shop protocols and procedures. May help identify additional training which would benefit students and/or faculty.
  • Assists students and/or faculty to design, fabricate, and/or adapt parts for classroom projects. Assists students and/or faculty with operation of tools and equipment while in the shop and ensures adherence to internal operating policies and procedures and external regulations (i.e., OSHA operating standards.)
  • Operates specialized hand and power tools and equipment in accordance with health and safety regulations. Inspects, monitors, and/or repairs general machine shop equipment to keep in proper working order. Maintains and services tools as needed. Makes recommendations on new and replacement equipment to upper management.
  • Maintains inventory of frequently used supplies. Helps maintain accurate shop records. Checks tools in and out to students and faculty.
  • Promotes and maintains a safe, clean, and organized working environment for self and others. Cleans up job site following work completion.
  • Attends departmental meetings, trainings, and workshops to maintain currency with and understanding of all policies and procedures related to the Shop, the College, and other outside regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains current knowledge and best practices on new tools, equipment, and technological advances.
  • Will be both CPR and First Aid certified. Will adhere to OSHA standards relevant to position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Fine Arts or related field) or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. A minimum of 2 years work experience in a lab/shop environment is required. Advanced woodworking and metal fabrication skills are preferred. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills required. Individual must be able to lift up to 30lbs without accommodations. Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends based on business necessity.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with CAD and Vector Programs, i.e. Illustrator, Rhino, and Solid Works.
Safety Oriented
  • Experience working with plastics, concrete and fabrics
