The Virginia Department of Health, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program is seeking a Nutritionist Supervisor Senior to serve as the WIC Coordinator for the District. This position supervises all nutritional programs within WIC and the supporting staff for the District. Characteristic activities include but are not limited to:
  • Overall responsibility for planning, implementing and providing nutrition services to the district (including areas within WIC, Maternal Child Health, General Medical, Family Planning, Baby Care, and adolescent health
  • Writes the WIC grants and the WIC Service Plan
  • Program planning, monitoring, and analysis carried out via conducting the State Technical Assistance Review (STAR); includes follow up documentation and corrective action planning
  • Performs technical training and programmatic assistance
  • Develop satellite clinics and provide outreach
  • Supervises professional and support employees
  • May provide nutritional assessment and education to clients
  • May perform other related administrative tasks


The WIC Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, supplemental nutritious foods, counseling at WIC clinics, and screening and referrals to other health, welfare, and social services. The goal of the Program is to improve the health of pregnant women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. The Division of WIC and Community Nutrition Services supports public health community nutrition throughout the Commonwealth. This effort is promoted through nutrition education topics including breastfeeding promotion and support.

The Three Rivers Health District, a 10-county district of health departments covering the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck areas of the Commonwealth, is a part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) that serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. As part of VDH, this position is a full-time state position with benefits including health insurance and retirement.

This position is currently based in Westmoreland County with the base point location possibly being negotiable within the district. Some travel will be required within the district with a personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement or with an agency vehicle when one is available. Typical work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm with some flexibility necessary depending on work location needs.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the USDA Women, Infants, and Children ( WIC ) grant for a one-year period ending September 30th of each year. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant or non-general funds.

Minimum Qualifications
As authorized by Section 54.1-2731 A 6 of the Code of Virginia, and pursuant to 18VAC75-30-10, requirements for use of title of Dietitian or Nutritionist, who has met the following requirements:
  • Has a baccalaureate degree with a major in foods and nutrition or dietetics, or has equivalent hours of food and nutrition coursework
  • Has two (2) years of work experience in nutrition or dietetics concurrent with or subsequent to such degree; and is employed by or under contract to a governmental agency
  • Extensive experience in supervising multi-disciplinary teams and providing team leadership
  • Experience in counseling and providing education to at risk families
  • Knowledge of principles of nutrition, public health programs, community resources, and principles of health education

Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or RD eligible.
  • Experience working with the WIC Program.
  • Previous experience working with a diverse population.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify.
