BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to counsel and encourage new and expectant mothers about the option to breastfeed as well as benefits toward both mother and baby to all pregnant clients on WIC, and all breastfeeding clients on WIC. A WCS Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will provide education and counseling to parents in group classes or on a one-on-one basis. This is accomplished by teaching clients the benefits of breast feeding, how to breast feed successfully, and providing correct and helpful information through encouragement. Other duties include providing ongoing outreach to the community regarding the programs WIC offers. A WCS Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will work as part of the WIC clinic team and will perform other work as required to support the clinic as a whole.

Per WIC State Agency Policy:
Requires successfully breastfed at least one baby.
Must have received or is receiving WIC benefits.

Flexible and able to work outside of the regular clinic hours and outside of the WIC clinic.

Successfully complete WCS- Breastfeeding Peer Training Classes.

Successfully complete 20 hours of State Agency Breastfeeding training. (WIC Certification Specialist Training).

1 L Oversee and manage all breastfeeding activities of the clinic, peer counselors, and clinic staff.
2 L Provide breastfeeding education to pregnant and breastfeeding women, WIC Program staff, and the community.
3 M Perform breastfeeding outreach activities to include networking and fairs.
4 S Control breast pump inventory, track pumps on loan, count number of products and supplies on hand to assist clients in their nursing needs.
5 L Completes annual breastfeeding promotion plan by researching needs, ensuring the plan is followed, maintaining supplies, equipment and materials, entering information in logs of pumps used, maintaining inventories and training staff.

Formal Education Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
