Job Summary
A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. The CCPHD WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator assists in peer counseling program oversight with guidance from the WIC Supervisor.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
1. Counsel WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone or in the WIC clinic.
2. Receive a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned throughout their breastfeeding experience.
3. Provide close contact and follow-up to mothers during the early postnatal period.
4. Provide information and promotes breastfeeding to WIC clients.
5. Provide the mother with advice on aspects of normal breastfeeding. 6. Provide anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems.
7. Assist in teaching breastfeeding class or support groups.
8. Teach use, cleaning, and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk.
9. Identify the need for referrals to the breastfeeding coordinator, IBCLC or breastfeeding specialist.
10. Keep accurate documentation of contacts with mothers.
11. Respect each client by keeping her information strictly confidential.
12. Attend staff meetings, Breastfeeding Coalition meetings and breastfeeding conference/workshops as appropriate.
13. Participate in the development and implementation of new and creative breastfeeding initiatives.
14. Utilize Client-Centered Services (CCS) principles when communicating with clients.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Attend Loving Support or Breastfeeding Basics Training.
2. Observe other peers or lactation consultant helping mothers breastfeed.
3. Read assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
4. Complete orientation to the WIC Program.
5. Attend on-going breastfeeding training.
6. Follow appropriate procedures for documenting client contacts and completing activity reports.
7. Adhere to local agency and county policies and procedures as applicable.

Job Qualifications
1. Has breastfed at least one baby.
2. Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and wants to help other mothers.
3. Is familiar with WIC, current or previous WIC client preferred.
4. Has good communication and organizational skills.
5. Is culturally competent with the WIC clients they counsel.

Flexible Scheduling & Telecommuting Options Depending on Position & Department
Paid Time Off:

  • Start through fourth years – 144 Hours (3.6 weeks based on 40-hour work week)
  • Fifth through ninth years – 184 Hours (4.6 weeks)
  • Tenth through fourteenth years – 224 Hours (5.6 weeks)
  • Fifteen and Subsequent years – 264 Hours (6.6 weeks)
