This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).
New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

This position works with supervisors, mechanics, and transportation maintenance workers to keep CDOT's equipment operational. This position's responsibilities mainly involve the repair and fabrication of structural components for CDOT's equipment and structures. This involves determining the most appropriate and cost-effective manner to make the equipment operational and coming up with appropriate designs. Both repair and fabrication involve welding various metal materials in flat, horizontal, vertical, and/or overhead positions, typically via mig or stick welding, and operating various machinery/tools to bend, straighten, cut, bore, grind, mill, plane, or abrade materials.
Major duties and responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to:
- Evaluate damage to equipment and determine whether repair or replacement is the best, most cost effective way to address; determine what type of repair or fabrication will be most effective;
- Effect repair on a variety of equipment, including plows, wings, sanders, truck frames, mowers, loader buckets, pipes, fuel tanks, hydraulic tanks, etc.;
- Effect repair on structures such as bridge expansion joints, bridge railing, cattle guards, drainage grates, etc. Travel to effect repair, especially in emergency situations;
- Fabricate parts that are outdated and can no longer be purchased; figure out specifications to ensure fabricated part is within tolerances, effective, and safe;
- Fabricate structural components to facilitate repairs; for example, fabricate piece of truck frame or fabricate piece of tower arm to reattach plow to truck;
- Use a variety of tools/machinery to complete repair/fabrication including: mig welder, stick welder, Tig welder, press, iron worker, saw, plasma cutter, compressed oxygen-acetylene cutter, lathe, milling machine, grinders, mag drill, scraper, etc.;
- Ensure that work is completed to be effective, safe, and to approved tolerances;
- Ensure proper storage of materials and supplies; ensure appropriate shut-down, such as shutting off oxygen before storing; store all flammables in fire box; have safe and secure racks for storing tanks and materials; ensure materials are properly labeled;
- Identify safety concerns and actively work toward creating a safer workplace; report concerns to supervisor;
- Maintain situational awareness, especially when traveling to complete on-site repairs to highway structures;
- Provide information, education, and guidance to equipment operators as needed; educate equipment operators on ways to maintain and operate equipment to reduce the need for repair;
- Contribute to an effective team working environment in the shop and with maintenance patrols;
- Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses; keep up with changes in job-related equipment, tools, materials, processes, procedures, and technology and maintain effective level of technical knowledge;
- Use computer software and CDOT programs to enter data and information in order to complete email, paperwork, reports, work orders, time sheets, fuel logs, supply orders, weekly updates, and accident reports;
- Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Typical work schedule is 7 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday
- Infrequent overtime
- May be required to be on call
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
- Exposure to loud noise
- Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
- Occasional travel throughout the Region to complete work and attend training
- On occasion, must be able to work outside in extreme temperatures and weather conditions – hot and cold
- Must be available to respond to emergency situations and must provide a phone number where employee may be reached. Emergency response coverage may last several days.

- Must have at least four years of skilled experience in welding, machining, and/or fabricating components for equipment and/or structures.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The following conditions mustbe met and maintained in order to be employed and/or continue employment at CDOT in this position, unless exempted by the Maintenance Superintendent.
- Must have a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) either Class A or Class B with no restriction on air brakes.
- Must obtain certification in vertical structural welding (3G) within 6 months of hire as a condition of employment. Preference given to candidates who already have 3G certification.
- Will be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e., drug test) and DOT physical
- Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
- Must be willing and be physically able to work at varying elevations up to 12,000 ft. in extreme temperatures and weather conditions
- Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency
The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced welder and machinist and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
- Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
- Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
- Extensive welding experience;
- Extensive experience with metal failure analysis, the repair of heavy duty diesel vehicles, various types of road maintenance equipment and their various attachments;
- Extensive experience in various precision machining processes;
- Excellent fabrication skills and experience;
- Experience in design, modification and fabrication of parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations;
- Experience in reading blueprints, sketches and/or drawings;
- Strong commitment to safety;
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
- Strong analytic thinking and problem solving skills;
- Ability to use innovative approaches when performing repairs, with consideration for available resources, budget, time, efficiency, and safety;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
- Strong positive can-do attitude and customer service skills;
- Flexibility in adapting to changing work assignments;
- Self-starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner;
