WEEKEND RANCH HAND – JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Weekend Ranch Hand
Reports to: Live-In Ranch Hand
Compensation: $15/hour
Responsibilities: This position is responsible for duties related to providing for a healthy and safe environment for all program horses and barn cats. This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds and to work outdoors in all weather conditions. This position requires the ability to work effectively with RMRT team and volunteers, the ability to take direction and then work to complete tasks independently. This position requires knowledge of and comfort with horses and horse care.
Horse Care: Provide basic horse care and help to ensure horse safety of up to 18 horses and 3 cats. These tasks may include but not be limited to the following:
- The horses are to be fed as indicated for each horse. Feed includes hay, grain, and supplements. o Morning feeding should be completed by 8:30 am or by 8:00 on days that there are lessons. o Evening feeding should be started no earlier than 4:30 and completed by
6:30 pm.
- In the winter, when the waterers freeze, they need to be broken in the morning.
- If it becomes necessary to provide water buckets for a given run, the Weekend
Ranch Hand is responsible for manually filling these buckets.
- The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for repairing any automatic waterers that are broken or leaking if instructed by the Live-In Ranch Hand.
- The Weekend Ranch Hand is expected to work agreeably with the Live-In Ranch
Hand around any changes in feeding or duties.
- The Weekend Ranch Hand should visually check each horse to observe any issues such as lameness, significant wounds, behavior changes, possible illness, etc. The Live-In Ranch Hand and/or trainer should be notified via email and/or text if there are any observations of note.
- The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for administering Banamine for colic, walking a colicing horse, applying ointment to a wound, etc. if needed. The
Live-In Ranch Hand and trainer must immediately be notified of a colicing horse or necessary wound care via phone call or text message.
- During warm weather months, the Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for making sure that all horses wear fly masks and for putting on fly sheets for horses with designated fly sheet needs.
- During winter months, the Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for blanketing those horses with designated blanketing needs
Cats
- The Weekend Ranch Hand will ensure cats have regular food and water
Pasture Turnout
- *The horses should be turned out to pasture daily between 11:00-11:30, weather permitting.
- *The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for putting muzzles on horses with designated muzzle needs.
Cleaning of Runs
- *The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for cleaning runs and stalls if part of the shift they are working.
- *The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for putting shavings in the stalls as needed.
Property Maintenance
- The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for helping maintain the property by completing any property tasks that have been assigned by the Live-In Ranch
Hand.
Time Off
- *The WeekendRanch Hand must communicate with both the Live-In Ranch Hand and Executive Director through text and/or email when requesting a day off.
- All requests for time off must be given with as much advance notice as possible.
- Requests for time off that are given less than 48 hours notice (for emergencies or sickness) must be communicated by text to both the Live-In Ranch Hand and
Executive Director.
- All requests for time off must be approved by the Live-In Ranch Hand.
Smoking
- Smoking is not allowed in the barn, the office, the apartment or outside at any time.
Professional Behavior
- *Promote and support an effective team environment, including adherence to
Ethical Communication practices with team, participants, volunteers and community members.
- *Represent RMRT in a positive and professional manner.
- *Maintain safety as RMRT’s paramount concern. Place safety first in all actions and activities.
- *The Weekend Ranch Hand is responsible for their personal guests visiting the property to sign an RMRT guest liability waiver.
- *Demonstrate respect, interest, compassion and caring for program participants, volunteers and community members.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 per hour
