Job description
St. Johns County Utility Department seeks a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to conduct analytical tests on different stages of treated and untreated wastewater and log readings for our well established Utility Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Utility Department’s Wastewater division is responsible for the treatment and disposal of domestic wastewater and landfill leachate for the protection of the environment. The Wastewater division maintains nine treatment facilities throughout the County, seven of these provide reuse water to common landscape areas of major developments and area golf courses. The total capacity of these facilities is 14.02 million gallons per day.

Examples of Duties:
The ideal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
- Maintains reports on all changes in plant process control. Implements recommendations and evaluations pertaining to chemical feed systems and hydraulic loading.
- Checks pumps and motors for proper operation throughout system.
- Maintains buildings and ground maintenance.
- Cleans and maintains machinery and equipment.
- Drains and cleans filters, clarifiers, settling tanks and aerators.
- Monitors chemical feed systems.
- Inspects and monitors plant operating conditions; monitors plant processes and makes adjustments as required.
- Calibrates and verifies meters and outdoor monitoring systems.
- Maintains log books on all plant functions.
- Collects wastewater samples for laboratory analysis.
- Conducts analytical tests on different stages of treated and untreated wastewater.
- Troubleshoots and repairs plant equipment.
- Cleans clarifiers, filters, contact chambers and aerators.
- Maintains plant buildings and grounds.
- Maintains full time presence on the job.
- Will require shift work.
Typical Qualifications:
Candidates for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for a minimum of one year.
- Must have State of Florida Class “C” Certification in Wastewater Treatment: An employee with “B” certification may be designated and placed as WTPO B, pay grade 14; with “A” certification may be designated and placed as WTPO A, pay grade 15. A Trainee, pay grade 12 (EEO 8), must obtain Class “C” Certification within two years of date of hire.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
