1. Volunteer Summary:

The Y Mentors program serves K-5th grade youth in schools/community sites and is a collaboration between the University of Minnesota America Reads program and the University YMCA (Y of the North). The Y Mentors program provides an opportunity for college students to serve as positive role models and build relationships with youth. Y Mentors engage youth in healthy living practices, literacy, social emotional learning, STEM and more! Join us for an amazing opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of young people in our community!

2. Volunteer General Responsibilities:

§ Build relationships with young people while engaging in activities with them in both small and large groups

§ Engage young people in developing and/or contributing to program curriculum

§ Support young people by being a good listener and positive role model

§ Provide input and help develop curriculum activities and projects for site

§ Strive for mutual respect

§ Build self-esteem and motivation

§ Attend all Y Mentors meetings and trainings/seminars

§ Report to Site Leads as required

§ Be consistent and show up to your weekly shifts

§ Accurately record how many hours you are at your site and manage workstudy funds

3. University YMCA Mentor Roles and Responsibilities:

§ Be a positive role model and peer mentor.

§ Maintain communication with team/program, check text messages, e-mail and voicemail regularly and respond in a timely manner to requests.

§ Participate in UY fundraising efforts: Phone- a- thons, letter writing campaigns, fall clean ups, etc. No salary/pay can be earned during fundraising events.

§ Any other duties required to make the Y Mentors program and the UY community a success.

4. Work Schedule:

§ 2-10 hours a week: 1-2 shifts per week- there are options Monday-Friday- for approximately 1-3 hours each, 1-2 hours for weekly program nights (Wednesday) for training, seminars and reflection.
