Overview:

As part of the Salt Lake City Posecutor's office, Victim Advocates assist victims of violent crimes and domestic violence by providing information and making appropriate referrals, assisting victims in court processes. Incumbents will also provide crisis intervention services and will liaison with, prosecutors, and other agencies to assist victims in all crime categories.

This position requires a high-degree of independent judgment, decision-making, and an exceptional ability to work with, and effectively communicate with, diverse populations in difficult situations.

This job opening is for an hourly, part-time, non-paid internship/volunteer opportunity. The hours for this position are flexible.
This position is not eligible for health benefits.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides crisis interventions for victims of violent crimes.
  • Provide information and resources in the initial contact. Evaluates needs and makes appropriate referrals for counseling, housing, shelter, legal assistance, and other services as needed.
  • Assists victims in obtaining protective orders. Assists in filing victim reparation forms, victim/witness statements and other documentation pertinent to their case.
  • Follows-ups on all assigned cases. Review incident report to determine advocacy needs. Access court computer systems; state, county and local police computer systems, criminal histories of offenders.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings to discuss problematic cases, identify service gaps, develop action plan.
  • Attends appropriate court proceedings to support the victim. Makes necessary arrangements for non-English speaking participants, accommodates hearing impaired and other disabilities. Monitors court activity. Informs victim/witness of court dates and any changes.
  • Serves as a liaison for victim with prosecutors.
  • Coordinates efforts and information with local domestic violence shelters.
  • Manages assigned cases of victims, including detailed documentation, and appropriate statistical data base information.
  • May be required to attend national, state and local conferences regarding victim assistance.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

  • Effective interpersonal skills, to work with individuals in crisis situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of domestic violence issues, judicial processes, and resources for victims of crimes.
  • Must successfully pass background check.
