Job description
The Victim Service Unit is a law enforcement-based organization that offers support, resources and services to victims of crimes in the City of Belton and surrounding areas. This is a unique unit as it is located out of the Belton Police Department. There are only 2 law enforcement agencies with in the Cass County area that have these services available. The Victim Service Unit made 1,758 contacts in 2019. So far in 2020 we have made 1,398 contacts, and that is in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.
The Belton Police Department Victim Service Unit is searching for a part time victim advocate. This individual should poses an understanding of domestic violence, sexual assault and the effects of how being a victim of a crime can cause turmoil in someone’s life. This person must also have the ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
This position will be responsible to assist clients in obtaining orders of protection and explaining the process. They will need to perform daily task of contacting clients, reviewing reports, and data entry. This position will also assist in recruiting and managing volunteers. This position will also need to be available for call outs.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, On average, it takes a victim seven times to leave before staying away for good. Sometimes to assist a victim to stay away and get to a safe place, the Victim Service Unit will get called out to speak to a client in the middle of the night. The person applying for this position will need to be available for their turn on the call out schedule.
Requirements
- Advocates must be over 18 years of age.
- Advocates must be able to work during day and evening hours and occasionally be on call. If called out, the advocate will need to be able to respond within 20 minutes.
- Advocates must have an open non-judgmental attitude toward victims and survivors.
- Advocates must have the ability to communicate well, think well and respond quickly.
- Advocates must allow a routine background check and have no criminal past.
- Have basic knowledge of the law enforcement process and criminal justice system.
- Advocates must be able/willing to complete 8 hours of “ride along” during a one year period.
- An understanding of Microsoft Access and Google Chrome is preferred but not required.
