Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center located in Central Point, Oregon is the only 24/7 Specialty + ER veterinary hospital in a 250-mile radius. We have board-certified veterinary specialists supporting many departments including Surgery, Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and our BRAND-NEW Urgent Care facility. We perform advanced therapy such as blood transfusions, chemo, complex surgical procedures and more.

Responsibilities:

  • Assistants provide effective and timely support for the staff veterinarians and CVTs, as well as working closely with clients, patients and other staff members
  • Assistants provide the highest quality patient care according to the guidelines below in Section C
  • This position provides excellent customer service including greeting and assisting clients who seek medical services, gathering patient information and keeping clients up to date on their pet’s status as needed
  • Assistants must follow all hospital policies and keep updated on any policy or nursing standard changes
  • Assistants are expected to maintain the highest standards of personal and professional conduct as well as being respectful to SOVSC, management and property
  • The technician assistant must have excellent people skills which includes being friendly yet polished, being warm and welcoming and have outstanding and effective communication skills
  • Accommodate all clients’ needs while being sympathetic, compassionate and professional
  • Anticipate the needs of the client or other staff members and act as a liaison between client, technician and doctor
  • May be required to field client calls, providing information and/or updates on patient condition
  • Understands when to direct a call to a technician and/or doctor and recognizes when a co-worker, supervisor and/or doctor should be consulted
  • Complete provided additional education and training materials as directed in a timely manner

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain a clean working environment for the veterinary team, which includes cleaning and disinfecting the facility; i.e. cages, surfaces, floors, walls, equipment etc. as directed in the “General Cleaning Protocol”
  • Takes steps to maintain patient comfort through a clean and comfortable environment.
  • Correctly performs patient treatments when directed by DVM or CVT, including giving medications, walking dogs, changing soiled bedding, cleaning litter boxes, feeding, etc.
  • Treats all animals kindly and ensures that they are clean before discharge
  • Anticipates patient discomfort and stress and takes all necessary precautions to ensure patient is as comfortable as possible
  • Immediately alerts staff DVM and CVT to a change in patient condition
  • Restrains and team-lifts patients as required
  • Assists DVM and CVT in patient procedures in the areas of cardiology, surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy, radiology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, critical care and emergency medicine
  • In surgery be able to stand in place for indeterminate amount of time provide retraction and manipulation of limbs and provide instrumentation organization on a sterile surgical field
  • Administers high quality patient care through timely monitoring
  • Regularly enters patient charges, lab results and client communications in the computer
  • Performs non-subjective laboratory work; proficient in the use of laboratory equipment including (but not limited to): IDEXX Catalyst, Procyte, Lab Station, Coag, SediVue, and iSTAT
  • Assists CVT in taking radiographs as requested by attending DVM and complies with state and hospital regulations regarding radiology safety
  • Updates clients on their pet’s status while hospitalized
  • Assists in answering telephones if needed, while employing professional phone etiquette and takes accurate and complete messages for hospital staff.
  • Advises callers and clients on the cost of examination, financial policies and driving directions
  • Assists DVM and CVT in presenting estimates to owners
  • Able to check in client properly, and discharge patients
  • Shares holiday, vacation, and sick coverage
  • Attends CE classes as requested by supervisor
  • Regularly attends staff, technician, and one-on-one meetings with supervisor
  • Assists CVTs with placing peripheral and central IVC, obtaining blood and urine samples, and performing injections (SQ, IM, and IV)

  • Assist CVTs with induction, intubation, and recovering patients under general anesthesia.
  • Develop and/or demonstrate a general understanding of the medications most commonly used; including usage and appropriate administration

Knowledge and skill requirement

  • Working knowledge and skill required to nurse ill and emergency patients
  • Ability to problem solve using common sense and the ability to follow orders from CVTs and DVMs, asking questions when orders are not clear
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful work environment. Must be able to maintain professionalism and composure at all times
  • Able to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, clients and the public in a professional manner
  • Ability to speak, read and write the English language

Education and experience

  • Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills are required
  • Basic computer literate with the ability to learn new veterinary based software applications

Working and Physical conditions

  • Working conditions are normal for a veterinary hospital
  • The noise level is moderate to high and includes business machines, medical equipment and patient barking/howling
  • Work involves frequent lifting of patients and inventory up to 40 pounds
  • Equipment operation may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to include but not limited to: eye safety glasses, lead lined gowns and gloves, ear protection, and latex or nitrile gloves
