Utility Service Operator (City of Lubbock Utilities)
Job description
The purpose of this position is to monitor and operate equipment that allows the utility to determine work to be performed, including both water and electric outages, collection, customer service, and field activities. The position also dispatches utility emergency and routine service calls. This position may require rotating shifts and working weekends and holidays.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates and monitors equipment related to outage management for both water and electric utilities;
- Answer calls on a 24-hour basis, providing requested information related to citizens' accounts, outages, repairs, and any other information available to address callers' concerns;
- Research and coordinate information with charitable organizations and medical personnel;
- Correspond both in writing and verbally with customers in an effort to collect payment of outstanding balances;
- Analyze reports to verify accuracy and efficiency of work;
- Research cases of tampering and utility theft, coordinating with law enforcement agencies regarding assessment of charges, and review of customer usage related to the utility theft;
- Receives and dispatches emergency and routine service calls. Enter and update the notification system for service, with time, location and nature of trouble, Contacts Dig Tess for emergency utility locates entering this information into a computerized log. Notifies maintenance crew of line disturbance and relaying vital information to maintenance crews;
- Advise staff in other departments on decisions regarding collections, reconnections, and payment arrangements;
- Make fast and accurate decisions which effects infrastructure, utility services and citizens' safety;
- Assist in handling complaints and providing information to internal and external customers;
- Complete daily requests from the Internet, fax, emails and inbound mail;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a High School diploma or, GED and formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training. Requires one to three year of experience dealing with customers or the public including analyzing large number or reports and data.
Position may require rotating shifts and working weekend and/or holidays.
