Trips and Logistics Manager
The Venture Out Project (TVOP) is a nonprofit organization that leads backpacking and wilderness trips for the queer and transgender community across the country. We also conduct transgender inclusion workshops for educators, adventure professionals, summer camps and more.
In addition to leading backcountry trips, we run frontcountry workshops and activities for the LGBTQ+ community out of our Southern VT home, Basecamp at Beaver Falls (BCBF). You can learn more about BCBF at https://www.basecampbeaverfalls.com.
We are looking for an independently-driven Logistician and/or Wilderness Operations professional with experience in backcountry travel and outdoor education. This role requires experience in program design, systems creation, and finding innovative solutions. As such, this person should be highly adaptable with an ability to work within an established system while still finding and initiating improvements. This person should be capable of approaching their work through a lens of risk management, sustainability, consistency, and most importantly, kindness.
Primary Responsibilities:
Logistics
- Warehouse management of all TVOP gear and food including annual inventory and purchasing. Ensure all necessary purchases are made prior to and during each season.
- Supervise on-site seasonal staff, daily trip operations, and trip pack-outs at Basecamp during summer season.
- Cultivate a positive and supportive environment for participants and staff of all backgrounds
- Manage food donations, participant needs, dietary needs and allergies, and make decisions around menu design and sourcing.
- Ensure the quantity and quality of trip gear is sufficient to meet the needs of current and projected trips. Communicate with partners and donors to stock trips within the budget and/or allotted annual in-kind pool.
- Help research and plan routes for the upcoming season including scouting, reservations, instructor needs, and alternative options.
- Create Trip Overviews (outlines) and communicate all logistical information with instructors and participants when needed.
- Work with Registration and Marketing to enter all trip data and communicate with the public in a timely manner.
- Find and initiate systems improvements when needed with little supervision.
- Ability to be present on a daily basis during TVOP summer season (May-Oct).
- Availability to be on call and act as point of emergency contact while trips are in the field.
Trip Operations and Strategy
- Support the Director of Operations on all company needs and daily operations.
- Assist with the annual instructor training, conduct seasonal interviews, manage staff contracts, and schedule pre/post trip meetings.
- Train with the Director of Operations in designing seasonal trips, staffing, budgeting, partnerships, strategy, and all things TVOP.
- Design and implement improvements in documentation, inventory management, sourcing, and sustainability.
- Continued growth in this area - an ability to come to the table with creative solutions and a desire to take on more ownership.
Trips & Events
- Leading backcountry trips (dependent upon experience)
- TVOP representative on joint events
Other duties as needed by TVOP
- Integration and assistance around the Basecamp property
Job Requirements:
- Personal and professional values consistent with TVOP’s mission, values, and principles
- Experience working with a diverse populations in a culturally competent and respectful manner. This includes folks of all races, genders, ethnicities, cultures, religions, etc.
- At least 5 years experience leading wilderness trips and/or comparable outdoor education skills
- Current WFR preferred, minimum WFA required
- Must be able to drive a 15-passenger van; Must possess a clean Motor Vehicle Record
- Able to participate in all trip activities; Able to lift 75 pounds
- Able to give and receive timely, effective oral and written feedback
- Effective leadership, supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Strong personal initiative, motivation, and resourcefulness.
- Strong presentation, writing, and computer skills.
- Business management skills including basic accounting, budget planning, and management
- Cooperative attitude and ability to be flexible
- Experience with Queer Community
- Backcountry travel experience and risk management skills
- Ability to work nights and weekends
- Ability to work independently
Job Location and Duration:
Florence, MA and Jacksonville, Vermont
This position is full time. Weekends and evenings will often be required.
Salary range: $45,000-$55,000 based on experience
