Team or Function Overview
- The Transportation Planner works with Corporate Transportation/Logistics and the Myerstown Supply Chain Manager in developing a distribution strategy to support the Myerstown plant. This position is responsible for managing all load tendering functions for their assigned plant and affiliated warehouses in a manner that ensures cost-effective transportation of finished goods at services levels that meet corporate and plant objectives.
Summary
- The Transportation Planner will use computer applications to determine shipping requirements, measure carrier performance, manage shipment reliability, perform cost/service analysis, and coordinate activities related to shipment scheduling through delivery.
Essential Duties
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop a distribution strategy that supports the Myerstown plant both in normal and high-volume periods. This includes the use of various modes (rail, intermodal, vans, fleet, transloads, relays, etc.) and distribution points in remote markets.
- Develop and maintain a carrier base, including private fleet, to support the planned and forecasted shipment volume at the lowest possible cost. Actively participate in efforts to expand the carrier base to meet demand spikes caused by sales promotions, seasonal buys, weather-related business spikes, etc.
- Optimize TMS use to drive low-cost and efficient load tendering.
- Manage carrier service relations, including private fleet, ensuring all orders are
dispatched and assigned for pickup on the appropriate ship date to meet promised delivery dates within approved traffic lane pricing guidelines. Review performance with carriers regularly.
- Coordinate the activities of the Logistics Coordinator, assuring that all shipments are scheduled and picked up on a daily basis, within process guidelines to meet the plant shipping/warehouse objectives. Assure internal customers are provided accurate and timely information regarding late shipments, etc.
- Work effectively as a team member within the Shipping department. Actively participate in a positive manner to implement, support, monitor, and achieve Shipping metrics and goals.

- Required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Must continuously have the ability to differentiate colors precisely
- Possess the ability to climb a ladder and/or stairs
- Occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear

- Bachelors Degree
3 or more years of transportation or logistics experience
- Proven work history that demonstrates successful accomplishments of new programs or processes by working collaboratively with others
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Advanced time management, scheduling, decision making, problem solving, and organization skills

- Strong work ethic and the ability to prioritize tasks
- Tech savvy, with proficiency in MS Office and Google applications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain and Logistics, Business, Finance, Accounting, or Engineering preferred
- Related experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, especially roofing
