Transportation Office Assistant
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
Assisting with the daily operations of the transportation department. Work includes, but is not
limited to, completing payroll documents and performing BSIP and TIMS responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensing/Certification:
- Valid driver’s license in the state of North Carolina (CDL preferred).
- Ability to maintain a school bus endorsement and pocket card
Education:
- Associates degree in business administration or related discipline (preferred)
Experience:
- Five years of successful similar experience in increasing levels of responsibility in school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws/regulations regarding school
transportation
- Provide technical and administrative support for transportation planning
- Train bus drivers and Transportation Safety Assistant (TSA) in the maintenance of TD-29
data (Route description), provide accurate road and student data information, coordinate
bus stops and routes issues with the TIMS Coordinator
- Serve as area on-call contact to all area drivers and Transportation Safety Assistants (TSA)
via BCS cell phone between the hours of 5AM-9PM.
- Prepare for and implement emergency evacuations as required
- Assist with securing substitute drivers, and drive routes as needed to establish on-time
coverage to include extracurricular activities
- Train and/or facilitate training for bus drivers and Transportation Safety Assistant (TSA)
on physical security issues related to school bus operators
- Monitor and communicate CDL requirements for bus drivers to ensure they maintain
compliance
- Assist in the management of and effective use of technology, on school buses, such as GPS
system, two-way radio and cellular communications capabilities, and surveillance cameras,
on school buses
- Assist in the preparation of all necessary reports relating to school transportation.
- Monitor bus driver performance and attendance, and verify timesheet accuracy for payroll
management of all drivers and bus monitors.
- Maintain detailed and specific documentation in employee e-files.
- Complete and distribute TIM’s communications to schools, drivers, and transportation staff
in a professional timely manner
- Provides input and suggestions to assist in updating the bus driver manual on an annual
basis.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Computer literacy and operation of various software applications including:
o TIMS System (basic understanding)
o Microsoft Word
o Microsoft Excel
o Payroll System
o GPS system
o Camera system
o Google
- Compliance issues related to the North Carolina school bus transportation program
- North Carolina School Law as it pertains to pupil transportation
- Safe, proper, and courteous operation of automobiles and school buses
- Relevant Board of Education, NCDPI, and State policies
- Regulations pertaining to the transportation department and staff member
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Establish and maintain working relationships with staff, students, parents, bus drivers, and
transportation personnel
- Develops and maintains professional alliances with school administrators to ensur
effective control over groups of students and ensure student behavior is not distractive to
safe driving
- Attend or present training sessions as needed and determined by the supervisor
- Demonstrate a team concept model for other employees in the organization
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous quality improvement
- Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Strength and energy sufficient to maintain an active work schedule involving driving and/or
physical exertion; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform assigned
duties; standing, stooping, or sitting for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to
operate tools and equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the
shoulders and horizontally as needed; lifting light and heavy objects, and ability to distinguish
between colors.
