Overview:
As the Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Peer Specialist, you will provide case management, mental health, and crisis interventions as needed and work collaboratively with the other members of the Expedited Transition Services and The Welcoming Center teams to complete risk screening and safety planning. Peer Specialists have a strong connection to the community and are knowledgeable about navigating resources, services, and supports for youth. The Peer Specialist’s personal experience as a consumer of mental health services is critical to building rapport and trust with youth, and advocating for their needs when necessary. As a Peer Specialist, you will work with the youth in the community, the office, their home, school, and other locations where the client needs support. The Peer Specialist can, at times, be a mediator, facilitator, or bridge between the youth, their family, and agencies. You will be part of ensuring each youth is heard and their individual needs are being addressed and met. As the Peer Specialist, may also assist the youth in exploring community resources, safety planning and developing coping skills to manage challenging behaviors and feelings.
The Peer Specialist will be a part of at least two teams:
Expedited Transition Services (ETS) provide prevention and stabilization-oriented services designed to support young people and their caregivers before, during and after placement changes. Program staff support the clinical treatment and provide consistent behavioral support to youth and caregivers/families. They engage youth and caregivers/families in activities both in their home/placement locations and in the community with the goal of helping youth and caregivers/families to make progress toward goals, increase independence, and experience success and stability.

The Welcoming Center (TWC) is a home-like receiving center/transitional shelter that supports children and youth ages 0-17 as they navigate the trauma of placement disruption. Our multi-disciplinary team provide safety, care, comfort, and therapeutic supports for up to 72 hours for young people in Riverside County who: have just been removed from their home; are returning from elopement; otherwise experience a loss in placement. Staff are currently providing these services in Beaumont, CA within Riverside County’s transitional shelter.

Responsibilities:
- Build positive, trusting relationships with youth and community supports.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and support for youth or any other natural supports.
- Help youth to build a general understanding and have a voice in navigating the systems they are involved in.
- Use knowledge of community resources, school systems or other mental health services to help youth identify and connect to a family safety network and/or a natural support team in the community.
- Collaborate as part of the multi-disciplinary ETS and TWC teams to provide crisis intervention, including risk screening and safety planning, and other mental health services as needed in youth homes and in the community.
- Provide case management services, including collaborating with a youth’s existing treatment team members (e.g., therapists, psychiatrists, child welfare workers, school staff, etc.) and/or providing referrals and linkage to additional mental health or community-based resources.
- Support youth in completing action steps identified by the youth and the treatment team, which may relate to education, employment, housing, benefits, etc.
- Maintain documentation and paperwork including but not limited to, mental health notes, incident reports, timecard, and expense reports.
- Participate in the on-call rotation.
REQUIRED:
- Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree OR
- Associate’s degree or equivalent + 1 year of applicable experience OR
- High School Diploma/GED + 2 years of applicable experience
- Applicable experience can include paid or unpaid experience working with youth or families, working in the social services field, providing intensive crisis support to youth & families, short term residential care, or acute psychiatric setting
- Must have lived personal experience with recovery from a mental health diagnosis and received mental health services as a child/youth. Willing to share their successful recovery process with the youth and families they serve.
- Experience or interest in working with youth and families.
- Ability to work as a team player and with a diverse population.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Own vehicle, California driver’s license and insurance.
- Clearance of TB test, fingerprints and any other mandatory state/federal requirements.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

- Starting at $20 to $22.50 per hour, actual salary dependent on creditable experience above the minimum qualification.
