BASIC PURPOSE:

The Costume Shop First Hand will assist the Draper with minor patterning, cutting and instruction of build technique to the stitchers. The Costume Shop First Hand is responsible for working with the Draper to overseeing and participating in the budgeting, construction, ordering of supplies, fittings and scheduling of build teams for all products being produced in the Tampa Studio Workroom.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist the Draper with the completion of both made-to-order and altered costumes for all NCLH productions. Supervise the workroom stitchers on construction techniques schedules and materials needed for all build projects. I Expedites productions within scheduled deadlines.

Attends fittings as necessary for troubleshooting and production continuity.

First Hand will manage small patterning projects, sewing of mockups, construction of garments and alterations for all NCLH-E productions.

Supervises the timely inclusion of fabrics/notions into costume productions.

Partners with Draper to provides supplies, especially stock fabrics, notions and materials to the workroom in a timely manner.

Maintain construction build timelines and process’ to keep within budget and schedule.

Perform other job-related functions as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree with a major in Costume Production or Theatrical Costuming experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of relevant and work-related skills and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a first hand in a professional costume shop. Professional experience is preferred, but similar professional costume shop experience and/or educational experience with supervisory or management experience will also be considered. The candidate should have experience giving instruction to stitchers on build processes. Must work well in a team environment and be able to assist the draper in all aspects of costume construction.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL: Knowledge of and general experience in theatrical cutting, stitching and crafts. Demonstrated experience in supervising a small team of stitchers. Basic knowledge of costume history and musical productions.

Working knowledge of costume materials including, but not limited to: Fabrics, notions, craft supplies. Working knowledge of machinery used in the costume industry including, but not limited to: Industrial and domestic single and multi-needle sewing machines, steam irons and cutting tools. Working Knowledge of safety standards and the implementation of same. Excellent organizational skills.
