Job Summary:

As our new Tester I, you will be responsible for conducting activities during the system test phase of the software development lifecycle. This includes planning and executing system tests based on adherence to requirements, identifying and managing test data, and identifying, and managing software defects. Support testing activities related to the validation of 508 compliance or compatibility between software applications and assistive technology devices. The Tester I is considered an entry-level position.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

Plan and Execute Accessibility Tests
  • Evaluate and assess the accessibility of web applications, websites, and web content.
  • Assist team to create and maintain accessibility requirements traceability matrices as it relates to testing.
  • Assist team with the creation of test plans in accordance with WCAG and Section 508 requirements.
  • Utilize accessibility validation tools such as SiteImprove, WAVE, or others.
  • Utilize screen reader technology such as JAWS, NVDA, or others.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Vendors, or Business Analysts throughout the testing process to ensure correct reporting information is relayed.
  • Analyze accessibility requirements, identify and document the most important test cases.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of test cases after project completion and make any necessary improvements.
  • Determine what test data is needed and work with the Senior Tester to acquire it.
Identify and Manage Defects
  • Follow defect management process for system test and user acceptance test.
  • Establish effective communications with development teams for defect management.
  • Document defects and their resolution.
  • Monitor the management of defects.
  • Determine when a valid defect has occurred, how to communicate it, or if it needs to be escalated for analysis or repair.
  • With input from Tester II and Senior Tester, identifies and recommends defect management strategies.
  • Determine the severity and priority of defects with support from the development team.
  • Determine if a defect fix is successful with support from the business requirements team.
  • Determine what defect metrics to communicate.
Innovation and Automation of Testing
  • With the support of Tester II and Senior Tester, create and maintain simple automated scripts for existing and new functionality.
  • Follow the templates to create, obtain and manage test data.

A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

Work Experience

  • 1 year of relevant experience with functional system test cases, data, or test suites, standard defect management tools and processes, application development, or regular client-side use of relevant applications with demonstrated understanding of program functionality.
  • Able to assist the team with the creation of test plans in accordance with WCAG and Section 508 requirements.
  • Able to utilize accessibility validation tools such as SiteImprove, WAVE, or others.
  • Able to utilize screen reader technology such as JAWS, NVDA, or others.
Education/Training
  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Preference will be given to those applicants who studied Information Systems, Computer Science, or related disciplines. Relevant work experience may be substituted for education at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Substitutions:

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.
  • Additional, appropriate paid or unpaid experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Training or Certification related to the work assigned to the position will be assigned credit towards substitution for experience and/or education, but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 or more years of testing experience
  • Experience with automated testing tools.
  • Basic knowledge of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL or scripting (Python, Ruby, or other scripting languages).
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint or Google Docs/Sheets/Slides).
  • Excellent analytic, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with an interest in solving challenging problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Conditions of Employment:

OIT employees must comply with any screening procedures in place at state entity locations where they might be required to perform work.

A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.

Positions supporting some agencies such as the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety will also require a pre-employment drug test.

This position may require travel within the specified geographic area, and to locations across the state as needed.

This position may require on-call duties as needed by the position.

This position is intended to work primarily remotely with periodic and required reporting to our Denver Office. All remote work must be performed in Colorado.

Supplemental Information

If this posting indicates “remote from anywhere in CO” in the title, periodic reporting to the primary state work location designated for the position is required. All remote work must be performed in Colorado.

While candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position. A reasonable timeframe for relocation will be established on an individual basis, while considering business needs, and determining a start date.
