Job description
Temporary security officer will be responsible for duties similar to regular security officers. Position will begin as soon as feasible and continue for an indefinite period of time. Schedule hours will generally be 4 pm to midnight or 2 am but the overnight and day shifts may be available on occasion. Must be willing to work weekends. The number of hours per week may be negotiable.
Security officers provide for the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks including random patrol of building and grounds on foot and by vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. Officers investigate criminal activity, maintain order, secure buildings, and respond to emergency and routine calls for service, all in an attempt to create a safe secure environment conducive to learning. Good communication, problem solving and customer service skills are essential for this position.
- Perform routine patrol of campus ground and buildings.
- Secure and open buildings per an established schedule.
- Interact with faculty, staff, students, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
- Create written documentation of incidents and routine activities using computerized records program.
- Must follow written directives and established procedures.
- Work through problems with logic and sound reasoning.
- Maintain order on campus.
- Respond to a variety of calls for service.
- Extensive driving including transportation of persons with mobility limitations.
- Work with personnel from other departments to meet the needs of the Luther community.
- Respond to medical emergencies and other crisis situations.
- Enforce parking and traffic regulations in a fair and impartial manner.
- Maintain crowd control at special events including athletic contests.
- Conduct investigations of criminal incidents and/or Code of Conduct violations.
- Develop and/or deliver crime prevention and safety education materials.
- Use two- way radios and cell phones for communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- A high school diploma or GED is requiredsome college is preferred.
- Must have or obtain CPR and AED training.
- Preferred qualifications include past security, law enforcement and/or customer service experience and training.
- Prior experience in a college setting or working with college aged people is desired.
- Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record and must pass an extensive background check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The position can be physically demanding and may involve the following:
- The ability to stand for long periods of time in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- The ability to perform extensive walking and climbing of stairs.
- The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- May be required to perform moderate lifting, bending and climbing.
- May be exposed to environmental hazards including, chemicals, bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- May be required to work in all types of weather conditions.
