Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Police Department is a service agency dedicated to the safety and security of the University community. The Director of Public Safety reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Safety & Risk Management. The delivery of services centers around one primary concern: ‘Protecting North Carolina’s Future.’ This commitment includes the provision of services to the community when crimes occur, as well as the prevention of crime. The employees of the Department of Public Safety continue to work in partnership with the community to deliver the finest possible services available. It is important to recognize that the services provided by this department are in support of a campus that was identified in the Terrorism Assessment Tool used by Orange County as the top designation in Orange County for terrorist attacks. Also, the Smith Center was designated for a site evaluation by the National Guard as part of their assessment of the state for terrorism activity. Emergency and Risk recovery plans are in place to ensure Public Safety’s services are not interrupted in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Additional complexities of the Department of Public Safety include a 911 Communications Center, which serves as back-up to Orange County Emergency Management’s 911 Communications as the second and only additional point of dispatch countywide. In addition to about 40,000 university students, faculty, and staff, the presence of a major medical center certified a Level 1 Trauma Center and major sporting events increases the population served to millions each year.

The department is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The UNC Chapel Hill Department of Public Safety was the first nationally accredited university law enforcement agency in the state, and one of only 43 in the country.
The department consists of about 110 permanent employees including 53 sworn law enforcement officers, and about 85 temporary employees including 30 sworn reserve police officers and about 40 contract security guards. The Operating Budget is approximately $8 million per year.

Position Summary
The Security Division is seeking to hire individuals with sound communication skills to perform security related duties at UNC facilities. Position requires a North Carolina Drivers License and good driving records. We are currently accepting applications for individuals with availability any time, seven days a week. These positions should average between 20-30 hours per week.
These are temporary contract positions with no benefits. These positions could last up to one year. Uniforms are furnished, but you must provide solid black shoes and belt. Since these are uniformed positions, you must adhere to departmental grooming standards.
The officer will conduct routine patrols on foot or by assigned vehicle (golf cart) Security Officers will work individually and independently in generally unsupervised positions. The officer will lock and unlock doors as necessary. The officer will check and record any damage to University property and report this information to the appropriate designated department. Assist staff, individuals seeking services (directions, information) and visitors with concerns escorts and disabled vehicles. Equipment malfunctions power outages heating and cooling problems chemical spills fire and any other health or safety related issues are to be duly noted in the officer’s activity report. Depending on the severity of the issue all aforementioned items shall also be reported to UNC dispatch. Complete documentation in a log format while on duty arriving on time and in proper uniform attire.
This position is considered to be an “ESSENTIAL" Employee position. This means that this position is one that is necessary to ensure that University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather, and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close. As such, employees will be required to report to work (or remain at work) according to your usual schedule, or upon notification, to report to work outside of your usual schedule.
This is a continuous recruitment and will remain open until all positions are filled.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver’s license.

Knowledge in protective, security and enforcement practices or the ability to learn.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer candidates that have law enforcement/security experience and are familiar with providing security.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to perform foot patrol (walking). Must be able to climb stairs. Must be able to work independently. Must be able to lift/move items up to approximately 25lbs. Training as required.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
