Position Summary
Are you enthusiastic about design and understanding user needs? Do you enjoy guiding the design process from early concept to mature prototypes? Do you seek to build the best solution possible for users? If so, consider applying to be the National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC) next UX Designer!

The User Experience (UX) Designer will help NEMAC to develop prototypes and design solutions using design research methods. The UX Designer will help us understand our users and the usability of our tools through team collaboration, planning, interaction design, and graphic design.

This person will also be expected to mentor NEMAC undergraduate research interns.

Responsibilities and Duties (including, but not limited to):
  • Implement NEMAC’s vision for user experience and user research, in partnership with NEMAC’s Software Designer, to help lead projects through the entire project lifecycle.
  • Partner and collaborate with NEMAC’s software development, communications, and geospatial teams to understand user problems.
  • Design and develop product wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to understand user workflows and ideas.
  • Facilitate user research and usability testing sessions and work with NEMAC team members to incorporate outcomes from these sessions into product design.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree is preferred, but we would also consider people with a certificate in user experience design. Alternatively, equivalent work experience can substitute for an educational degree.
  • Previous experience in a UX or related design role.
  • Ability to research problems, communicate ideas and design improved user experiences.
  • Experience with research design utilizing various methods (i.e. usability studies, surveys, etc.)
  • Proficiency with CSS, HTML, and design software tools.


Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Desired but not required: the ability to share portfolio or case studies of past design projects (including wireframes and prototypes) to help demonstrate experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proven communicator and storyteller and ability to connect with the target audience.
Strong facilitation skills with familiarity with facilitation methodologies.
Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while managing multiple projects.
Attention to detail.

Work Schedule and Hours
  • This is a temporary position, paid on an hourly basis, and paid bi-weekly.
  • As with all NEMAC staff positions, this position is contingent upon funding. Continued funding for this position will be evaluated on an annual basis.
  • Remote/hybrid work allowed. Remote/hybrid work allowed if located in North Carolina; if fully remote, then must have the ability to travel to Asheville several times a year for meetings is required.
  • Typical hours are Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. eastern time. Occasional work on evenings and weekends may be needed based on departmental needs.
