Job Title: Technician 5 – Security Systems and Operations
Position Function: Technician 5 is directly responsible for servicing and maintaining low voltage systems, including intrusion systems, access control, and CCTV. New installations as well as major system renovations are made by this department when dictated by capital improvement projects. Ability to carry out assignments and perform work of good quality with minimum supervision. Demonstrate outstanding qualities in efficiency, initiative and dependability when completing various tasks.
Essential Performance Responsibilities:
- Accepts the responsibility for assisting with the training, skill development and supervision of other team members.
- Assists in maintaining good public relations, being cognizant that a Technician 5 represents both the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools.
- Cooperates with other employees and maintains good public relations inside and outside of his/her assignment.
- Displays willingness to be trained in all phases of the assignment and to increase his/her skills, thus, qualifying for advancement.
- Possesses a work ethic that is strongly oriented toward both efficiency and customer service.
- Maintains appropriate licenses and certifications including a valid Kansas driver’s license.
- Possesses superior knowledge of procedures, materials and equipment utilized in the designated area while displaying good workmanship, planning, and leadership.
- Supports the organizational goals, the mission of the Schools Service Center and the district.
- Works cooperatively with others and assists in maintaining open lines of communication.
- Works directly or indirectly under the Supervisor.
- Possess knowledge and skills in installation and maintenance of low voltage systems, including WAN/LAN, CCTV, including DVR software applications, Napco security systems, access control systems, and computer knowledge.
- Understand grounding techniques and requirements.
- Installation and maintenance of low voltage systems including: CCTV, intrusion systems, access control systems, and basic computer functionality and operations
- Help and cross train with other Technicians in the shop when needed
- Basic computer functionality and operations
- Maintain current knowledge relating to technical information and policies concerning this Facilities area
- Make decisions and offers solutions to the unit Supervisor(s) concerning problems in the field
- Assists in the planning and estimating of labor and material costs of assigned jobs.
Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Equipment: The employee must demonstrate the ability to use various equipment assigned to the job position as needed. Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment. This position requires the ability to use basic office equipment such as computer, scanners, and copiers. Must always comply with USD 259’s guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: Travel between schools and central offices is required.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- Ability to perform all tasks and work the hours required.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
- Ability to wear proper safety equipment as required while performing the various responsibilities required for this position.
- Additional demands upon request of Supervisor.
- Attendance at required meetings and in-services.
- Daily schedule may fluctuate to accommodate deadlines and delivery of services.
- Exposure to chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
- Frequent lifting 20 to 50 pounds; occasional lifting of 50-100 pounds; lifting of over 100 pounds with assistance.
- Work in high places on ladders and/or lifts.
- Work in standard office and school building environments.
- Work in wet and dusty conditions.
- Working overtime on short notice is mandatory.

- Ability to communicate both verbally and written in order to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization for the purpose of giving and obtaining information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a Supervisor when their discretion is needed.
- Ability to perform as an effective team player.
Ability to plan, organize, make decisions and prioritize work to meet the daily demands of the building - Basic computer proficiency and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel

Interrelations:
- Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
- Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
- Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
- Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
- Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service
Employee Punctuality and Appearance:
- In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave
- Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator
- All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position
Qualification Profile:
- A High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Two years of low voltage experience is required.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Specifics:
Possess knowledge and skills in installation and maintenance of low voltage systems, including WAN/LAN, intrusion systems, access control systems, ADVANCED computer knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Understanding how to read a multimeter and toning equipment for tracing out wires. Look up activity logs and system alerts for potential security breaches inside intrusion and access control systems.
