Senior Technical Writer
This position has the possibility of 100% remote work.
Purpose:
- Valkyrie Enterprises is seeking a Senior Technical Writer who will develop moderately complex technical information, to include authoring and organizing technical documentation and evaluating technical data for accuracy and completeness.
Job Description:
- Plan, prepare, and develop technical manuals in the Web Contenta Navy Publishing Application (NPA) using Arbortext SGML Editor, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Review and incorporate revisions into technical manuals based upon information derived from Technical Manual Deficiency Evaluation Reports (TMDERs), SHIPALTS, and other technical data.
- Evaluate and research engineering data such as drawings, design reports, and equipment specifications.
- Write analytical, interpretive, and documentary literature.
- Develop new technical manuals from varied technical documentation.
- Convert legacy technical manuals into SGML.
- Revise moderately complex technical drawings and illustrations to updated specifications.
- Perform Quality Assurance (QA) reviews.
- Communicate with engineers and other technical personnel for information gathering purposes.
- Provide direction and training to incoming employees.
Qualifications:
- Must have a HS or equivalent and at least 2 years of technical writing experience.
- Must have experience in the interpretation, planning, and preparation of various types of technical documentation on Naval Ship Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E), Electronic and Weapons Handling Systems, and Equipment or equivalent.
- Must be proficient in the use of personal computers using Microsoft Office and Windows applications including word processing, graphics, and desktop publishing software.
- Must possess excellent communication, grammar, writing, and customer service skills.
- Must have strong attention to detail, organizational and prioritization skills, and the ability to multitask multiple projects with tight deadlines.
- Must be able to apply comprehensive knowledge and understanding of technical data (such as drawings, test specifications, reports, naval messages, and equipment operating procedures) to technical documentation in a straightforward and easily understood manner.
- Must be able to follow applicable military specifications and best practices solutions.
Desired Qualifications:
- Prefer a bachelor’s degree in English or Journalism and should have 5 years of experience as outlined below.
- Prefer 5 years of experience in the interpretation, planning, and preparation of various types of technical documentation on Naval Ship Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E), Electronic and Weapons Handling Systems, and Equipment.
- Prefer 3 years of experience developing technical documentation using either the Navy Publishing Application (NPA) or the Navy PMS Editor (NPE), or equivalent.
- Prior SGML, HTML, S1000D experience.
- Prior HM&E military experience.
- Prior Quality Assurance (QA) review experience.
Security Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional travel-up to 10%.
- If position requires travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases, candidate must be able to obtain (by start of position) and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL ID. Physical Requirements:
- Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds
