YouthBuild Lowell is currently seeking a full time Teacher who will be responsible for teaching basic academic skills to students with varying academic levels, while integrating Reading, Math skills, Social Justice, community issues and culture into the curriculum. The YouthBuild Teacher will work to prepare YouthBuild students to meet necessary goals needed to qualify to get a high school equivalency degree.
YouthBuild is a vocational program for young adults between the ages of 16 to 24 who have dropped out of school and are ready to embrace a second chance to receive educational and vocational training to achieve success. YouthBuild provides education and employment training to prepare youth for careers in either Construction and/or Culinary Arts.
Responsibilities include:
- Teach basic skills to students including math, reading, language arts, social studies, science, social justice and community issues, and culture into the curriculum.
- Responsible for integrating high school equivalency test skills into the curriculum.
- Ensure classroom compliance with program standards; provide daily leadership and mentoring in the classroom; and assess individual student progress and adapt curriculum and lesson plans to the needs of the students.
Qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching basic skills to high school students, young adults, or adults.
- Familiarity with the TABE pre-assessment test, high school equivalency test and other standardized assessments required.
- Thorough understanding of and commitment to serving the needs of disadvantaged and/or adjudicate youth.
- Experience in creative curriculum planning and development.
- Ability to work sensitively and effectively with multiracial and multicultural groups.
- Excellent customer service, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to motivate students and collaborate with others around program issues, and team teaching.
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or English/Khmer) are a plus.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
