The YMCA of the Pikes Peak region is looking to hire an experienced Swim Instructor to help children and adults of all ages develop proper swimming techniques and skills. The Swim Instructor’s responsibilities include evaluating each student’s performance during swim sessions and providing feedback, completing attendance, progress, and accident reports, and ensuring that all swimming aids and equipment are in good working order. To be successful as a Swim Instructor, you should demonstrate patience and enthusiasm and be able to motivate students to accomplish their swimming goals. Ultimately, an exceptional Swim Instructor should be able to communicate effectively with students and ensure that all water safety rules are adhered to.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor will provide skill-based swim and water safety instruction to participants of all ages. You will maintain constant supervision of students at all times to ensure safety. The Swim Instructor will create positive, nurturing relationships with students and build cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers. You will facilitate peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

WE ARE LOOKING TO FILL SWIM INSTRUCTOR POSITIONS AT ALL BRANCHES ACROSS THE PIKES PEAK REGION

SHIFT REQUIREMENTS

Monday-Thursday: 3:45pm-7:15pm

Saturday: 8:45am-11:15am

SWIM INSTRUCTORS' REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Current WSI or YMCA Swim Instructor or experience teaching swim lessons
  • Proficient in swimming and safety skills
  • Up to 6 months swim instruction experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize students who may need assistance
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations
  • Demonstrated ability to swim and tread water within Y-USA training guidelines
  • Knowledge of swimming and ability to teach at all age groups and various levels
  • Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other Y staff and volunteers

SWIM INSTRUCTORS' RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities.
  • Plans and implements program activities that is culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Helps to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants.
  • Adheres to YMCA program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices.
  • Maintains constant supervision of students, identifies students who need assistance, and supports students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
  • Attends staff meetings and training.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff. Models' relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Provides participants and parents with on-going feedback regarding student’s progress.
  • Set up, take down, and organize class equipment. Report damage equipment to the supervisor.
  • Secure qualified substitute when necessary.
  • Act as a responder in case of injury, accident or illness in the pool area. Provide back-up coverage to lifeguards as needed (ex. crowd control).
  • Maintain certifications.
  • Adhere to Association aquatic uniform policy.
  • Support and follow YMCA policies and decisions.
  • Answer member’s questions about the YMCA and programs.
