The Sustainability Managing Director, Management Advisory Services (MAS) reports to the MAS National Leader and will assist clients in developing their strategy and approach to sustainability. We’re helping companies become more resilient, sustainable and share with key stakeholders their path to sustainability. You’ll focus on enhancing our client's ESG commitments, identifying, and prioritizing sustainability issues and integrating their sustainability vision into overall corporate strategy.

This role involves working across the firm and for a range of industry sectors. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the new BDO Sustainability Services and help companies to drive impact and communicate their shared value proposition.

As an Advisor or Business Process Specialist in a large enterprise or consulting services firm, the candidate should demonstrate a proven record of success in sustainability, non-financial reporting, managing and/or consulting on environmental, social and governance issues in the following areas:
  • Demonstrable experience in leading ESG initiatives including development of ESG strategy, integration roadmap and risk assessments; definition of roles and responsibilities, targets and key metrics ensuring alignment with corporate business objectives and best practices.
  • A track record of implementing sustainability programs and a knowledge of the major areas of measurement of success.
  • Technical experience with evolving reporting frameworks, principles and standards including, but not limited, to WEF, TCFD, SASB, GRI Standards, Integrated Reporting, UN PRI, and CDP.
  • Knowledge of ESG ratings and consulting services to improve ratings.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with North American “US & Canada” listed company reporting as well recent developments in North American “US & Canada” and international reporting.
  • Proven track record of delivering strategies for ESG and/or decarbonization strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops an integrated and coordinated sustainability strategy for clients, with objectives designed to drive business results, reduce risk, and enhance the client’s reputation on environmental, social and governance issues
  • Identifies opportunities for value creation based on thorough understanding of clients’ needs and challenges and provides an independent point of view
  • Builds communities of internal and external experts to provide a richer solution to clients issues
  • Manages and builds client relationships and provides industry insight and experience in the domains of sustainability and social development
  • Uses expertise on sustainability to develop new client relationships and expand existing relationships by delivering strategic consulting advice, excellent value, and quality service
  • Authors whitepapers and other documentation to contribute to BDO’s thought leadership on ESG

Business Development
  • Manages a book of business
  • Reviews and approves engagement budgets and identifies opportunities to improve engagement efficiencies, where possible
  • Directs multiple client engagements and underlying economics to ensure engagement metrics are achieved
  • Identifies, grows, and maintains strategic relationships with client personnel, including members of client management
  • Oversees the preparation of formal and informal presentations for client meetings
  • Collaborates with not only MAS partners to service clients and expand our presence in the marketplace, but also other practice leaders to bring the best solutions to our clients and prospects
  • Identifies new business opportunities to expand the practice and communicates such opportunities to his/her practice partner
  • Works closely with the practice partner to manage marketing and business development activities within practice
  • Oversees the development of draft proposals and reports, and completes research, as needed

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental-related subject, Economics, or Business Administration/Management, required
  • Master’s degree with Sustainability/ESG or related (e.g., climate change) qualifications, preferred

Experience:
  • Eight (8) or more years of business process transformation experience, required
  • Expertise in developing processes, controls, and technology to support non-financial reporting, required
  • Experience working with a range of cross-sector clients and industries, preferred
  • Business development experience including generating sales with new clients and developing internal networks, preferred

License(s)/Certification(s)
  • Relevant Sustainability certification(s), preferred

Software:
  • Proficient in the use of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Power BI, required

  • Contributing to thought leadership and sharing lead practices on sustainability processes and programs
  • Identifying, creating, and leveraging relationships to forge new service opportunities and create tailored solutions for our clients

  • Exhibiting deep project management skills, including overseeing the successful execution of project plans, budgets, deliverables, staffing, billing, and collections
