Job description
Every summer the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) hosts young people participating in Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and other summer programs. The Summer Meal Specialist is responsible for overseeing breakfast and lunch service for youth participants. The specialist will be responsible for maintaining regular communication and coordination with our meal provider (i.e. reporting numbers of youth served, any missing items, etc.); set-up, service, and take-down of breakfast and lunch service; and maintenance of a safe and healthy meal service. If not already trained, the specialist will receive food-handling and/or food manager training to ensure food safety. This is a Temporary Part-time position working approximately 20 hours per week, Monday- Thursday (June 12th- August 9th).

LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 5,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. LAYC/MMYC also conducts advocacy and public policy work to broaden opportunities for youth.
LOCATION: Washington, DC
COMPENSATION: $20.00 - $22.00
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive daily food deliveries.
- Complete daily and weekly reporting on meals served.
- Set-up and take-down breakfast and lunch service Monday-Thursday for entire six-week program.
- Maintain safe meal service practices, following all food handler requirements.
- Lead communication between meal-provider and LAYC.
- Track youth participation in meal service as required by meal provider.
- Support LAYC pantry efforts, packing food bags and filling orders.
- Communicate and collaborate with LAYC staff.
- Promote a respectful, safe, multi-cultural setting.
- Maintain a professional relationship with youth: No sharing of personal social media or socializing with your youth outside of LAYC sanctioned events or fieldtrips.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Experience working with food; food manager’s license preferred but not required.
- Experience Working with youth preferred but not required.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Time management skills and ability to multi-task.
- Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
- Flexible, energetic, positive individual with commitment to youth development in a high quality, respectful environment.
- Ability to work well and communicate with culturally diverse populations.
- LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a physical position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small and medium objects up to 25 lbs. It requires carrying food into the building and lifting large trays of food and crates of milk in and out of the oven and refrigerator.
