Student Support Center Coordinator

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this class, however, employees may perform other related duties not listed and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee.
  • Coordinates and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Cougar Support Center
  • Plan and implement basic needs outreach strategies; and, educate prospective students on benefits and support services at the college.
  • Serves as a liaison and resource for internal and external services under basic needs. Assist in the planning, development and implementation of the district’s basic needs educational program designed to encourage the success and retention.
  • Provides referrals for specialized support services such as on or off campus employment, housing, community resources, and mental health and wellness services; and follow ups
  • Assists in monitoring expenditure and related basic needs budgets; researches and recommends equipment and materials needed for the Cougar Support Center
  • Gather and analyze data and situations and make appropriate decisions
  • Establish and maintain full confidentiality of information and records of students
  • Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations as it relates to the position
  • Assist with all relevant reporting to the campus and to the Chancellor’s office.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
An applicant can meet minimum qualifications in one of two ways as listed below:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of clerical experience using modern office technology including proficiency with database, spreadsheet and word processing software such as Microsoft Access, Excel and Word, or
  • Associate degree or equivalent and two (2) years of clerical experience using modern office technology including proficiency with database, spreadsheet and word processing software such as Microsoft Access, Excel and Word.
Desirable Qualifications
Bilingual: Spanish/English.
Experience working directly in support programs and leadership roles.
Case management experience.
Personal:
  • Ability and desire to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.

  • Ability to demonstrate fairness and patience in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment regarding interactions with students.

Knowledge of:
  • Admissions and Matriculation processes
  • Applicable sections of State Education Code and other rules and regulations relative to the area of assignment
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations relating to Veterans Affairs
  • Basic knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheets, social media, internet, email system, and PowerPoint software
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment
Ability to:
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, a computer, and assigned software
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students and employees
  • Prioritize work assignments to meet important deadlines
  • Meet the public, students, and staff members cordially and effectively.
  • Enter and retrieve computer information.
  • Keep files current, accurate and in order.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading laws, codes, rules, policies, and other printed materials.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
  • Ability to bend and twist and lift and carry 15 pounds.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Manual dexterity to handle or operate materials and equipment.

Environment
A community college campus with an emphasis on student success. Work is generally performed in a busy office environment.
SUPERVISION
Supervision is received from the Coordinator of Student Life and Basic Needs. May take or give work directions on projects as assigned. This position has no supervisory duties.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range for the position is a Grade 24 on the Classified Salary Schedule with a range of $24.16-$32.24 per hour. This is a full time, 12-month position. This position is eligible for participation in West Kern Community College District's comprehensive fringe benefits program that includes District paid medical, dental and vision coverage for employees and their dependents, as well as a generous vacation plan. Employees are eligible for membership in either CalPERS or CalSTRS retirement systems.
