The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation’s Biomechanics Lab is looking for a student research assistant to provide image analysis support for a variety of histology images generated by ongoing internally and extramurally funded research projects.

This position is part time with approximately 20 hours/week.

Position responsibilities include:

Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by the principal investigators (PI) of the research project or other department research staff as approved by PI.

Summarize and present data and models to PIs and other members of the research team

Assist with digitization of prepared histological samples

Execute analysis routines in various software packages to support computational mechanical modeling of tissue experiments.

Collect, track, and perform data entry.

Effectively transfer data and specimens to project team members.

Able to organize, execute, and report projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources, to achieve project objectives.


Required Qualifications include:

Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, another engineering discipline, or a similar STEM field from an accredited institution.

Previous laboratory experience.

Attention to detail, ability to multi-task, organize priorities, and work independently to meet deadlines.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work well within a cohesive team.

Experience using software for image analysis (e.g. Matlab, Image J, ITK, ITK-Snap, Osirix, etc.)

Knowledge of methodologies, tools, and techniques for conducting research, studies, and tests.

Highly Desired Qualifications include:

Evidence of experience analyzing medical (radiographic, fluoroscopic, or CT) images.

Evidence of experience analyzing histological images.

Desired Qualifications include:

Working knowledge of orthopedics and human anatomy.

Knowledge of some medical terminology.

Knowledge of practices, behaviors, applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing proper research conduct; ability to demonstrate ethical and compliant behavior in diverse situations.

This position is only open to undergraduate and graduate students registered at an accredited institution. This position is open to UIowa students (S140) or non-UIowa students (PZ07) from which one will be hired.
