Job description
Serve as a key player in the analysis, planning, and implementation of critical strategic and business development initiatives. Analyze potential inorganic and organic opportunities, perform financial valuations and business assessments including the identification of risks and opportunities. Assist with M&A due diligence and integration activities to ensure significant risks and opportunities are identified, quantified and considered as part of the transaction terms and overall acquisition plan.
In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to engage with executive management at Schnitzer Steel and target companies, including business and senior functional leaders, middle level functional directors and managers, and outside counsel and investment bankers.
Strategy
- Inform corporate strategy by researching new/adjacent markets, monitor competitors and identify key trends consequential to Schnitzer
- Deliver data-driven analysis to support actionable strategic recommendations and business prioritizations
- Build business cases with cross-functional teams to support new business initiatives
- Analyze and understand Schnitzer’s strategic objectives, and help to create/refresh board presentations periodically
- Identify, recommend, and present on markets/services/technologies that help to meet those objectives
Corporate Development
- Be involved in the full transaction lifecycle from target identification to execution and post-close integration
- Help quarterback the transaction process, drive due diligence and information flow to ensure key milestones are met
- Observe and participate in all aspects of deal execution including negotiations, due diligence, financial modeling, presentations and project/information management
- Engage with cross functional leadership to build buy-in and influence decision making
- Develop and maintain knowledge of target markets and relevant companies within those markets to identify inorganic growth opportunities.
Essential Functions:
- Lead key analysis and evaluation on a variety of strategic projects across the company’s continuous stream of growth, cost savings, and productivity improvement initiatives.
- Build detailed financial models to evaluate various business initiatives and combinations.
- Create high quality presentations for senior management and the Board of Directors detailing strategic initiatives and financial rationale.
- Work with business leaders to develop and critically evaluate the underlying assumptions used to develop valuations and benefits of strategies targeted.
- Participate on a multi-functional team to conduct due diligence, conclude findings and incorporate impact on valuation, purchase terms and integration.
- Assist in project management with integration of strategic initiatives.
- Research and develop growth strategies for the auto parts, metals recycling and steel manufacturing businesses.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in finance, law or related fields.
- 1 - 3 years of experience in investment banking, consulting, business / corporate development, or related, progressive, rigorous finance positions.
- Good business acumen with a keen ability to critically evaluate functional and operational problems and opportunities, including leading the development, communication and execution of plans to address problems and capitalize on opportunities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and project management skills with the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization.
- Advanced user of Excel and Powerpoint.
- Strong organization skills; adept at prioritizing and seeing the “big picture”.
- Strong work ethic, fast learner, high bar for work quality and dedication to results.
