WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM MECHANIC
(Stationary Mechanic – Journey Level)

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Districts) are a non-civil service public agency separate from Los Angeles County government with over 1,700 employees. The San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) consists of two hydraulically interconnected facilities that are situated on the east and west side of the San Gabriel River (I-605) freeway. It currently provides primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment for a design capacity of 100 million gallons of wastewater per day (MGD) and serves a large residential population of approximately 1,000,000 people.

The Districts is recruiting for Journey level Wastewater Treatment System Mechanics. Current vacancy is in Whittier at our San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant. The essential functions of this position are to perform more skilled preventive repair and maintenance of stationary equipment and machinery in a wastewater treatment facility. Working hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. After hour, overtime, and weekend callbacks will sometimes be required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver license; - AND - Four years performing directly-related skilled maintenance or craft duties involving the repair and overhaul of a variety of comparable machinery and equipment. Twelve semester units of college coursework or completion of one year of a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for one year of the required experience; or graduation from a two-year trade school in a mechanical technology or closely related program may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
NOTE:
The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B California driver license within six (6) months of appointment. A crane certification from the State of California is also required. Crane certification involves attendance at training sessions, passing written and/or practical examinations and providing annual evidence of medical fitness. This training will be provided by the Districts and is mandatory for the individual who is selected for this position. In addition, the selected candidate must be medically cleared to wear a respiratory protection device and be able to pass a pulmonary function test annually. Incumbents must not wear contact lenses nor have facial hair that would prevent the safe and proper fit of self-contained breathing apparatus.

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The competitive selection process may cover: Knowledge of: Methods, materials and tools used in the repair of large and complex mechanical equipment such as engines, compressors and pumps and their operation; use of precision test equipment and tools; hand tools, welding and cutting equipment, pipe cutters and threaders, valve grinders and various saws; occupational hazards and safety regulations of the trade. The ability to: Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment; read, interpret and work from repair manuals and specifications; use specialized tools and equipment; and instruct apprentices in trade techniques.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 50%, and an interview weighted at 50%.
  • Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
