- POSITION SUMMARY
- The Senior Continuous Improvement (Sr. CI) Specialist is responsible for leading, facilitating, and promoting culture transformation with the development of leaders, management system implementation, strategy deployment, and improvement projects across Elliot Health System using improvement science and lean methods. The incumbent will coach, teach, and mentor and inspire operational excellence. This includes working with and coaching members of senior leadership, area leaders, and front-line teams using a data-driven, scientific problem-solving approach and teaching continuous improvement methods by delivering curriculum designed to foster a culture of improvement. The Sr. CI Specialist coaches and works with area leaders and teams to identify areas of quality improvement, high reliability, and to sustain improvements by leveraging daily management systems approach; works with teams to develop key performance indicators to monitor processes and outcomes; and assists in applying change management techniques for successful and sustainable improvement that capitalizes on reflection and learning. The Sr. CI specialist will promote a culture of continuous improvement across the organization by espousing and enacting continuous improvement and respect for people philosophy and principles.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and facilitate system-wide, strategic improvement projects/ across the organization to improve and redesign and optimize processes which are critical to quality and patient care.
- Engage senior leaders, area leaders, and front-line staff in using lean principles and tools to eliminate waste, improve flow, and create value for patients and internal customers.
- Utilize a data-driven, statistical approach including the development of key performance indicators, data collection, monitoring and analysis.
- Conduct and facilitate effective A3 problem solving discussions for local challenges and quality improvement.
- Deliver verbal and written presentations and project status updates to large and small audiences as needed including the use of visual management tools.
- Facilitate education of senior leaders, area leaders, and teams on improvement science, methodology, and concepts.
- Proficient in the knowledge and use of change management techniques. Manages team dynamics, organizational dynamics and encourages creative thinking for successful outcomes.
- Drive the continuous improvement and respect for people culture within the organization through leading by example. Develop people through education and coaching on continuous improvement methods and scientific problem solving.
- Serve as a coach and mentor to new continuous improvement team members.
- Lead and facilitate complex, cross-functional and/or system-wide value-stream initiatives connected to the health system strategy that incorporates product strategy and design thinking.
- Lead and facilitate multi-day, multidisciplinary complex kaizen events and rapid process improvement workshops (RPIW).
- Lead lean management system development across the enterprise. Coach and teach teams on maturing, evolving, reflecting, and sustaining their management system as well as leveraging it for further improvement and alignment with the overall Quality Management System.
- Coach and facilitate strategy development and deployment at all levels of the organization.
- Maintain a good sense of regulatory and accreditation requirements and how management systems drive performance and operational excellence, as well as uphold key functions of the Quality Management System and ISO standards.
- Utilize design thinking and product strategy principles to drive innovation in care delivery.
- Anticipate and address any inequity impacts of continuous improvement activities.
- Ensure improvement work is consistent with and supportive of Elliot Health System's mission, vision, strategic plans and culture.
- REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Knowledge of various improvement methodologies with demonstrated experience in application of continuous improvement skills for project implementation and sustainability.
- Knowledge of various improvement methodologies, with the ability to use a specific methodology end-to-end.
- Knowledge of coaching Kata, continuous improvement principles and concepts.
- Knowledge of design thinking, and product strategy concepts, with experience with strategy deployment optimal.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 in health care and high reliability frameworks.
- Strong analysis skills for collection, root cause and tracking purposes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong application of improvement science.
- Ability to perform statistical analysis to define the problem and data, as well as better understand root causes for problems to create measurable and effective solutions.
- Ability to listen, learn, and adapt to different personal and learning styles.
- Ability to facilitate diverse groups and foster collaborative relationships.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE
- Education: BA/BS in Healthcare, Statistics, Informatics, Business, Engineering or other related field required. Masters in a healthcare related field preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of Continuous Improvement experience with use of advanced lean tools required. Proven team facilitation experience required. An additional one-three years of experience in health care field. Previous leadership positions with coaching role, facilitation of system-wide value-stream initiatives, and experience leading multi-day, multidisciplinary, kaizen/rapid process improvement events preferred.
- Certification/Licensure: Lean/Six Sigma Blackbelt/Master Blackbelt Certification or advanced training and certification required. Project Management certification is advantageous.
- Software/Hardware: Various statistical packages such as Minitab. Advanced skills with Microsoft product suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Visio. Epic EMR, Smartsheet, Tableau, and simulation software experience preferred.
