POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sports Instructor will represent the YMCA of Long Island in a positive and professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient and courteous service. The Sports Instructor will be responsible for teaching classes as assigned and for the safety and well-being of all class participants.
Areas of specialty include:
· Golf
· Tennis
· NHL Street Hockey
· Cooperative Dodgeball
· Slam Dunk Basketball
· T-Ball
· All Star Sports Sampler – Sports include: Basketball, hockey, soccer, dodgeball, and gaga
· Bumblebee Sports – Pre-K to 4 years old, sports include: Tennis, basketball, and hockey
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities.
2. Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each program session.
3. Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive.
4. Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (i.e. ratio, attendance).
5. Be able to modify lesson plans and instruction to meet the needs of the participants.
6. Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
7. Teach rules, fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
8. Communicate with parents / guardians regarding the progress of their child / teen, and registration for the next session.
9. Communicate to parents / guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child / teen.
10. Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.
11. Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
12. When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or referees who are supporting the program.
13. Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions for emergency situations.
14. Ensure the cleanliness of program space during all activities.
15. Inform Supervisor on-duty regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
16. Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings and special events.
17. Attend scheduled meetings with Health and Wellness/Program Director in preparation for upcoming sports sessions
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Minimum of one year of experience teaching children / teens sports, in a structured setting.
3. Knowledge of youth development stages.
4. Content expert in designated sport(s).
5. Excellent verbal communication skills.
6. Current First Aid / CPR certifications.
