The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) supports and strengthens social science research, teaching, and community and professional engagement and enhances the future of innovative, collaborative, cross- and interdisciplinary, and cutting-edge social science scholarship at UMBC. CS3 is a component of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS).

in the research community.
CS3’s Research Administration Division consists of a team of 8 employees. The team assists faculty in obtaining funding for research and provides pre- and post-award administration. Research administrators are essential to research success within CAHSS and UMBC as a whole. There are many components to overseeing a sponsored project including proposal development and submission, project monitoring, project administration (budget and finance), coordination and support. The research administration division is responsible for managing our current award portfolio of 51 sponsored awards valued at approximately $15,000,000.
Reporting to the CS3 Manager for Research Administration, the Specialist will provide a high level of pre- and post-award research administration support to the CAHSS faculty. The Specialist is responsible for proposal development, proposal routing and assisting with all aspects of post-award administration. The Specialist will act as a point of contact for externally funded accounts and serve as a liaison to UMBC central offices on behalf of CAHSS faculty supported by CS3 research administration. The Specialist must be able to carryout tasks and make decisions independently.
UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $54,500 and has over 4 weeks of vacation for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available.

A hybrid telework schedule may be available.
Preparation of proposals including:
- Reviewing Requests for Proposals (RFPs), essential documents for compliance, and budgets for accuracy.
- Developing proposal budgets
- Serving as a liaison to sub-award institutions to collect and review required proposal documents and reviewing budgets for accuracy.
- Uploading documents and data into Kuali for routing.
Provide post-award administration of external awards including:
- Processing human resource, payroll, procurement and sub-award transactions.
- Maintaining post-award grant tracking system.
- Performing monthly reconciliation of awards including payroll and accounting expenses.
- Researching and resolving errors independently.
- Processing journal entries and payroll transfers.
- Assisting PIs with the effort reporting certification process including navigation & troubleshooting.
- Assisting with award close out process.
- Replying to questions related to research administration.
- Providing guidance for academic department staff with regards to the research administration process.
Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Business or a related area
- Two years of related experience (Master’s Degree in related area may be substituted for the required experience).
- Proficiency in spreadsheet applications is a must. Must have strong math and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and handle multiple and complex tasks. Must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and possess strong organizational skills. Proven ability to work with relevant software technologies is required. Excellent verbal and written skills. Strong customer service skills and ability to work well with external agencies, University administrators, faculty and staff required.
Experience in higher education, grant administration, PeopleSoft and Kuali
