Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Cloud Engineering, the Site Reliability Engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing Observability solutions to support a proactive IT operations culture. As well as developing and documenting optimized networking and ingress components, API functional tests, and failure response scenarios for the various components of Aspen's application platform. This role will serve as subject matter expert for the design and support of all ingress, routing and access concerns of web traffic and API interactions for Aspen's Production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance our platform's Observability and Monitoring & Alerting infrastructure utilizing AWS services and/or approved external tools according to best practices
  • Lead operations of the production environment by developing a strong understanding of, and serving as SME for, Aspen's application delivery architecture in particular, ingress configuration & load balancing, DNS and related certificate mgmt., Nginx based reverse SSL proxy configuration, service discovery and mgmt., API interaction and web traffic mgmt.
  • Create a catalog of basic API functional tests, writing code to implement and automate those tests, to the extent a baseline of platform functionality can be verified on-demand
  • Measure and optimize system performance across the entire stack, with a proactive approach to spotting problems, reducing complexity, and performance bottlenecks
  • Maintaining a highly available platform of durable services through Kubernetes configuration mgmt., automation of infrastructure processes related to API testing, scaling operations, failover solutions / failure mitigation and DNS mgmt
  • Create alert mechanisms for system issues related to availability. Propose and implement IT operations dashboards for aggregating system event alerting and tracking scheduled processing events across the platform
  • Implement and utilize a Traceability solution to debug complex application issues across the entire application stack and create reliable solutions that provide continuing improvement of our platform's operating parameters
  • Strong experience with network and routing management, web traffic and API interaction configuration and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of AWS data services and their related availability and recovery strategies, and configurations, specifically DMS, SQL & Postgres RDS, DynamoDB and S3
  • Review and maintain platform disaster recovery infrastructure and application configurations, implementation plans, runbooks and associated documentation for regular auditing as required for HiTrust compliance
  • Contribute to the growth of the organization's engineering standards through knowledge sharing and lessons learned, continually improving best practices, and contributing to methods to systematically advance Aspen's platform and capabilities
  • Perform tasks spanning the full lifecycle of cloud engineering activities with minimal supervision
  • Serves as a member of Aspen's Operation Response team with potential off-hour responsibilities or other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Job Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or related fields with 3+ years of experience working with enterprise systems in high-compliance contexts;

OR

  • 6+ years of proven experience in Site Reliability engineering, AWS Cloud engineering or DevOps engineering roles supporting enterprise systems in high-compliance contexts
  • Experience in collaborating with Product teams, Analytics teams, Developers and Data Engineers to elicit, document, and translate business requirements into functional requirements for components that integrate into the existing unified, highly-available system architecture
  • 4+ years work experience supporting enterprise systems in a Restful or Service-Oriented application architecture

Advanced experience in:

  • AWS core platform services, particularly EC2 & VPC networking, load balancing, security and observability components related to our platform's ingress management
  • Creating and managing Infrastructure via Terraform and Terraform Cloud
  • Process and test automation scripting with Python and/or Bash, Lambda & Step functions
  • Competency in test automation best practices and methodologies, as well as strong technical documentation skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment as a part of a cross-functional team
