We have an exciting opportunity available for a Senior Scientist II within the Pharmaceutical Development Group in the AbbVie Bay Area (ABA) CMC Biologics department in South San Francisco, CA.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop formulation and drug product manufacturing processes for ultra-low protein concentration products and complex biologics spanning multiple therapeutic areas in various phases of development.
  • Drive technical innovation and fundamental scientific understanding of protein physiochemical degradation pathways; evaluate and recommend new approaches to inhibit protein adsorption/interfacial instability.
  • Generate high-quality data based on sound scientific principles and prepare formulation data summaries, technical reports, scientific presentations, and regulatory documents.
  • Raise the external influence of Abbvie in the scientific community through external presentations, patent applications, and publications.
  • Actively participate in drug product development teams and contribute to the planning and execution of formulation and drug product process studies to meet project deliverables.
  • Lead AbbVie global drug product initiatives and manage direct reports.
  • South San Francisco-based position with 10-20% business travel.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, analytical sciences, or equivalent field with 4+ years of experience or BS/MS degree with 10-12 years of relevant experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.
  • A strong technical background encompassing protein chemistry, protein physics, analytical development, and formulation development is required.
  • Candidates must have hands-on expertise in analytical techniques used for protein characterization and stability testing.
  • Prior experience in the development of complex protein product formulations, lyophilization process development, and fill-finish process is required. Late-stage and ultra-low dose product development experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience demonstrating independent critical thinking for technical problem-solving and driving fundamental science through innovative science is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional team initiatives while working in a matrixed environment is highly desirable.
  • A track record of driving innovation, publication, and engagement with the external scientific community is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and written skills are required.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off. (vacation, holidays, sick), medical/dental/vision insurance and 401(k) to eligible employees

This job is eligible to participate in our short-term incentive programs.

The salary range is (minimum: $96,000 to maximum:$188,000)
