Background
The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is the state’s Stem Cell
Agency. We were created by the voters of California when they approved
Proposition 71 in 2004, and renewed when Proposition 14 was approved in 2020, providing $5.5 billion to invest in stem cell research in California. General Statement
The mission of the Therapeutics Development team is to attract and advance the most promising stem cell-based technologies in cancer, in eye diseases and diseases of the nervous system, and in metabolic, vascular, and other organ system-related conditions (e.g., musculoskeletal, respiratory, liver, cardiovascular). Projects in the therapeutic areas range from translational research through human clinical trials.
Job Functions
Building the Portfolio
- Being up to date on trends and key developments in the stem cell and gene therapy research field.
- Works in a team environment in identifying and advancing the most promising translational and clinical stage stem cell-based and gene therapy technologies for unmet medical needs. Staying current and open-minded in ensuring only the most promising and well-constructed projects are considered for inclusion into the Therapeutics Development portfolio by supporting a highly competitive, fair, and rigorous peer review process.
Advancing the Portfolio
- Accelerates the development of promising projects by working in a collaborative and hands-on fashion with internal and external partners.
- Proactively identifies risks or deficiencies with active projects and leveraging internal and external resources to find solutions that provide the project with the greatest opportunity for success.
- Seeks new and innovative ways to improve and accelerate the therapies into the clinic.
Managing the Portfolio
- Assesses the progress of projects through objective metrics and ensuring the complete and up-to-date reporting on all projects in your portfolio.
- Works with the project teams to facilitate success.
- Monitors funding and other resources to ensure they are being used appropriately and efficiently.
- Recommends appropriate action to suspend or discontinue projects when warranted.
Communicating the Portfolio
- Represents CIRM and the Therapeutics Development at appropriate scientific, medical, governmental agency, and industry meetings and events.
- Provides clear and timely updates to CIRM leadership on the status of the portfolio.
- Engages with all stakeholders (scientific thought leaders, subject matter experts, patient advocacy groups) to build support for and advance projects.

- Collaborates with others to generate efficiencies, enhance productivity, and develop competencies.

Supervision Received
The Senior Science Officer reports to the Associate Director,Therapeutics
Development.
Qualifications and Skills
The Senior Science Officer will have scientific and clinical expertise and experience in cell/molecular biology, or a related discipline especially as applied to stem cells and gene therapy. Industry experience and familiarity with regulatory requirements related to cell and gene therapy early and late clinical development. The Senior
Science Officer will have an innate sense of urgency and determination to deliver outstanding results and to find innovative ways of meaningfully advancing CIRM’s mission.
- An “all in” commitment to accomplishing the mission of CIRM.
- Doctorate (MD/-,PhD, PharmD) in medicine, clinical research in the cell and gene therapy area,
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience beyond doctoral degree in biologic/drug development, Clinical & regulatory development, pharmaceutical
/biotechnology industry, and/or biomedical clinical research.
- Expertise in one of the therapeutic areas such as neurology, ophthalmology, hematology/oncology, or organ systems (cardiology, vascular, liver, or renal) is a plus.
- Knowledge and hands on experience with cell and gene therapy development process or related discipline that has a direct bearing on the clinical development of stem cell-based and gene therapies
- Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make clear, concise, and impactful presentations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with clinical project management and regulatory filings or interactions
(FDA, pre-IND, and IND filings).
Working Conditions
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
During the COVID pandemic, remote work is acceptable, however eventual willingness to work collocated with the team is a must.
Attendance
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined at the Department’s sole discretion. Must be regularly available and willing to work the hours the Department determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
Salary Range and Benefits
The annual salary range for the Senior Science Officer position is $145,491 to
$228,273.
