Job description
Why Hearst Magazines
Hearst Magazines is one of the largest publishers in the world, with more than 25 brands, including Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Harper's BAZAAR, Popular Mechanics, and O the Oprah Magazine. We reach more than 150 million people every month in the United States alone.
But we're more than just our magazines. We engage our audience across all mediums and channels - print, digital, video and social – with sophisticated content creation, distribution and data capabilities. We create, package and sell products with cutting-edge technology and proprietary platforms. Together, we are reinventing publishing for the 21st century.
Your Impact
At Hearst Magazines Digital Media you will join a diverse, supportive community of creatives building new experiences in digital media. You will have the opportunity to employ an end-to-end product design skillset including visual design, user experience design, user research, prototyping and presentation/interaction coding for our proprietary media platform. Contribute to an end-to-end design process that allows you to fully understand and own your work. You will work with diverse editorial brands such as ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Runner’s World, Esquire, House Beautiful and more.
We are building the team to create, maintain, and evangelize the design system for our proprietary technology platform. The platform, Resin, powers our Content Management System (CMS), our site styling, front-end experience, and multiple B2B services. Team projects include Design System development and management, upgrades to our brand theming system, a user interface for content creators, and brand asset management for B2B clients. The Design System Team will set the standards for the user interface of our platform.
Who you are
You will be the lead designer on our design system team, working closely with Design System Engineers, the Product Manager, and Product Design Manager, as well as other team members across our platform. You will create user interfaces and patterns based on user research to contribute to our design system. You will work with designers from our Tools team to help build the user interface for our theme management system.
Responsibilities
- You will work with the product design manager to set and maintain components in Figma —from branching to merging—so we are able to see new additions, statuses, and release notes.
- You will help create, maintain, and update a shared component library, and educate other teams on how to work with and contribute to it
- You will work alongside the product manager to develop best practices for adding new components to the design system
- You will innovate on existing components to include new and improved functionality through testing
- You will work closely with the design system engineer to maintain our documentation
- You will create a consistent format for documentation around components and guidelines— including accessibility
- You will use your previous experience with building design systems to make recommendations for best practices, workflows, tools, and software to help the team work more efficiently
- You will support the continued growth and evolution of the design system
Qualifications
- 4+ years professional experience designing web or mobile products that have been fully implemented and released to a consumer or business market. Experiences should include working on a content management system and/or marketing platform and a design system.
- Experience working with Storybook with multiple themes
- Expert in user interface design
- Experience distilling complex product requirements
- A commitment to user research and testing, accessibility, and inclusive design
- Hands-on knowledge of contemporary digital product design tools and technologies. This could include Figma, Sketch, Invision, Framer, HTML, CSS, JS, React, and Git
- Portfolio of design work showcasing your work
