The UNC SOM Clinical Research Alliance (CRA) coordinates large multi-center trials generating evidence to advance treatments that serve North Carolinians and beyond. Working with the leading scientific experts at UNC in partnership with the National Institutes of Health and Pharma, and national academic institutions, the CRA provides full-service coordination through pre to post award activities.
Activities within the CRA include proposal management and submission, protocol and CRF development, IRB and FDA submissions, site training and certification, recruitment and enrollment, data capture and management, study monitoring and safety reporting, and study compliance and quality for large scale Phase II IND studies and more.

The Senior Director of Business Development will serve in three main roles: a) director of a central support unit for Business Development to serve other units across the SOM, b) director responsible for the team coordinating proposals and grant submissions for all funding sources for the Clinical Research Alliance unit, and c) liaison for School of Medicine to other units on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus, as well as UNC Health.
The Senior Director of Business Development will be responsible for the oversight, management, and decision-making of day-to-day operations and functions like Finance, Human Resources and Research Administration of the Clinical Research Alliance (CRA). The responsibilities include the oversight of all research proposals and grant submissions, and of all funding sources for the Clinical Research Alliance. This is a leadership role serving as a liaison for School of Medicine to other units at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC Health, and various external entities. The position will do continuous evaluation of existing and future resource alternatives, proactive planning and collaboration with executive leadership and operational peers. The position will manage relationships with various stakeholders in the UNC environment to anticipate and resolve potential problems and concerns.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Ten or more years of experience managing and developing complex proposals in a large university setting, including at least four in leadership roles.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal and organizational problem-solving skills.
- Effective team leadership, mentoring, training, customer-service and negotiating skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers, and clients.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, including adeptness at time management.
- Strong software and computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience working as a director or associate director in a Coordinating Center environment with a large portfolio.
