POSITION TITLE: Security Officer

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs all duties related to the providing security services for library patrons, staff members, volunteers and property
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Lead Security Officer
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
BENEFITS:
Benefits include vacation and sick leave, and 12 paid holidays. Part-time employees are eligible for limited benefits including voluntary life and AD&D policies, and supplemental insurance benefits. Retirement options are available after one year of employment.
WAGE: $16.50-21.01 per hour DOE
Requirements:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Makes frequent security rounds throughout the facility and adjacent property including parking lots to ensure safety of library patrons, staff members, volunteers and property. Preserves order and enforces regulations pertaining to library patrons, property and premises. Maintains records and prepares reports. Transports items to others buildings and assists maintenance and custodial personnel as necessary. Light custodial duties as necessary.
2. Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on Library affairs. Attends monthly staff meetings and staff training; attends external trainings as requested, stays aware of changes via staff wiki.
3. Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the Department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
High School graduation or equivalent
Two - five years of previous public safety experience
Proficiency in word processing software, Internet and electronic mail
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Skill in communication and de-escalation
Ability to exercise quick, mature judgment in diverse situations, including disruptive, physically dangerous, verbally/physically abusive people and emergencies
Ability to work with a diverse group of people within a fast-paced work environment
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license
Ability to complete concise and grammatically correct reports
Ability to operate a variety of library equipment in a safe and effective manner
Proficient in word processing software, Excel, Internet, electronic mail, and other technologies
Ability to effectively use Google Suite and staff wiki
Skill in understanding and applying oral, written, illustrated or demonstrated instructions
Knowledge of building safety and security sufficient to be able to respond to a variety of emergency and urgent situations
Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe working environment
Knowledge and current awareness of library principles, practices, procedures, methods, and philosophy
Knowledge of standard safety practices
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Remain standing for extended periods of time
Lift and carry an object 20 to 50 lbs
Maneuver about the library in a timely fashion
Read a minimum print size equal to 10 point
Tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books
Communicate verbally with public, staff, and volunteers in person and on the telephone
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposed to infections and contagious diseases
Exposed to unpleasant elements
Subject to varying and unpredictable situations
Handles emergency or crisis situations
SCHEDULE:
Includes evening and weekend hours
Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to be available to work flexible hours to cover unplanned staffing shortages.
