Job Description

The Maintenance Aide Trail Maintenance Crew works under the leadership of the District Trail Coordinator. The reporting location is the District Office at Malibu Creek State Park. The incumbent will frequently be required to work in remote locations and will often have to hike long distances to locations. The incumbent is also required to help transport heavy materials long distances down trails to project locations. The incumbent is required to lift heavy materials of 50 pounds or more on a regular basis and work as part of a team to lift objects weighing 75 pounds or more.

The typical tasks of a team member in trail maintenance includes: trail construction, restoration, and rehabilitation. Work on trail facilities will include working on miscellaneous structures such as gates, vehicle barriers, fences, rock walls and brushing trail corridors. Trail crew members will provide trail finishing handwork after heavy equipment is done. The trail crew will also install and maintain erosion controls including energy dissipation structures, rock walls, armored swales and rock lined ditches. Team members will provide support to and oversee various work crews and volunteer groups.

The position is required on occasion to work nights, weekends, odd hours and overtime in accomplishment of assigned tasks. The crew may be required to stay overnight at spike camps near project sites throughout the district. Spike camps are 8 days long and often without typical campground facilities. As this position does not work in the rain or while the ground is muddy, work schedules may be adjusted unless staff can be scheduled for alternate tasks prior to these weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English at a level required for successful job performance
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Learn all work procedures and park rules; meet the public successfully
  • Have a valid California Driver's License
  • The successful candidate will purchase and wear a California State Parks uniform
  • This position is subject to live scan fingerprint clearance.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $16.11 - $18.00 per hour
