Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Scrub Tech to join our team!
JOB SUMMARY:
The Operating Room Scrub Tech assists the surgeon at the sterile field by providing appropriate and adequate sterile instruments and other supplies during the operative procedure. Maintains the surgical field through aseptic and sterile practices. Works under the supervision of the Surgery Team Leader as a member of the surgical team. Assists in the nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient for surgery and performs routine and delegated duties according to the standards of practice and policies of the facility and department. Facilitates and demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Is responsible for the setting up and performance of surgical cases by assembly of equipment and supplies according to physician preference cards.
- Is responsible for the setting up and performance of surgical cases by opening sterile pack, supplies, and instruments according to sterile technique.
- Prepares sterile field, including sponge, needle, and instrument counts when needed. Ensures the sterility of supplies and instrumentation's used during operative procedures.
- Works cooperatively in the clean up of the operating room following surgery, including the proper disposal of used supplies and sharps, the cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment and operating room.
- Handles and labels specimens according to proper policy and procedure.
- May act as an assistant to the circulating nurse in preparing the patient for surgery, positioning the patient in the appropriate position, and moving the patient to and from operating table. Assists the circulator in other duties as directed.
- Demonstrates understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis in all duties.
- Uses supplies conservatively and efficiently.
- During surgical procedures:
- Passes instruments to the surgeon and the assistant.
- Is attentive to the operative area by being alert for breaks in technique.
- Maintains an attitude of willingness to assist with the surgical procedure.
- Is aware of the location of all instruments, needles, sponges, and specimens during the operative procedure.
10. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of the outer skin layer after cesarean section when specifically requested by the surgeon. Will close skin with method indicated by the surgeon either suture or staples.
11. Assists the circulator with responsibilities for intra-operative safety related to infection control, presentation of exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and handling hazardous material.
12. Prepares soiled instruments for cleaning. Transports soiled instruments tray to sterile processing per current policy and procedure.
13. Works cooperatively with other staff in putting unused supplies and equipment away and restocking the operating room.
14. Adheres to and practices MVH Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance activities.
15. Performs on-call duties for emergency surgeries during after-duty-hours and on weekends on a rotating basis.
16. Maintains professional competency through appropriate continuing education.
17. Is fully knowledgeable of policies and procedures specific to the perinatal department.
18. Performs jobs duties in agreement with AST Standards of Practice.
19. Assists with any other duties as deemed necessary.

- Adheres to the hospital dress code. Keep long hair pulled back.
- Reports to work when scheduled, not absent without prior notification, no excessive sick calls.
- Completes assigned work, does not leave unfinished tasks for others to complete.
- Prioritizes tasks so that the most important tasks are completed first.
- Interacts with other department and staff members in a manner which promotes optimum service to the patients and/or the public.
- Fosters good will among the staff members and community.
- Demonstrates willingness to perform tasks of a reasonable nature as directed by the supervisor.

- Supports supervision and adheres to hospital policies in a positive and constructive manner.

- Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of any potential problems or nonconformities relating to patient care of supporting activities
- Initiates, recommend, or provide solutions through designed channels.
- Discontinues the use of defective supplies or equipment until the condition has been rectified. Reports broken equipment immediately.
- Maintains competency through education, training, and in-service activities.
- Supports and attends on going education on the unit.
- Promotes positive communication in the work environment.
- Does not gossip or bring discontentment into the unit.
- Supportive of Supervisor and Manager.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Maintain annual CCN competency.
- Maintain required certificates every 2 years before expiration.
- Be current on Policies and Procedures.

Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician Program. Must have current CPR certification.
Experience: Operating room experience preferred.
Equipment/Technology: Basic computer skills. Able to use radiant warmer.
Language/Communication: Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and speak English. Bilingual skills a plus. Excellent communication skills.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios. Able to calculate drug dosages.
Mental Capabilities: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Can adapt to rapidly changing workloads due to changes in the surgery census. Can frequently and consistently make sound judgments.
Interpersonal: Works well with others. Able to take constructive criticism. Self motivated.
Performance: Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Able to prioritize patient care for safety and optimal outcome. Can work well under pressure and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
