Overview
The Safety Specialist is responsible for the execution of Mississippi Lime Company's (MLC) safety systems and culture, primarily for Ste. Genevieve operations. Understand and assist in the development, execution, and measurement of safety goals, metrics and KPI's. Work with and assist other members of the safety & health department, as needed.
Requirements
Education: Safety BS/BA Degree or equivalent safety experience required. MSHA Training Instructor Certification (IS, IU) a plus.
Experience: Previous MSHA and/or OSHA manufacturing experience preferred. Underground mining experience desired.
Certifications: MSHA Training Instructor Certification (IS, IU) a plus.
Skills: Attention to detail. Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel, web based safety data systems like Dakota. Practical proficiency in Industrial Hygiene sampling and monitoring.
Abilities: Ability to work and communicate well with personnel at all levels of the organization.

Essential Functions
Stay current on safety and health regulations. Provide guidance for compliance with current MLC and governmental safety rules and regulations for all management, supervision and work force.
Work with safety pillar teams to address employee reports of unsafe acts or conditions and follow up to ensure any problems are resolved in a timely manner. Facilitate the sharing of best practices and areas of opportunity for safety pillar teams.
Work with employees to risk rank major tasks and develop defenses where needed for those that represent significant risk.
Through learning teams, execute outstanding response and corrections to significant deviations/errors and preventive actions to reduce the likelihood and severity of future incidents.
Work with employees to develop new and update existing Safety Standards, as necessary.
Conduct periodic inspections of plants, mines, and contractor work, to ensure working conditions and practices are in compliance with all safety rules and regulations. Consult with department management, and supervision on any safety violations noted, and provide guidance for corrective action. The primary responsibility of Safety Personnel is guidance; however, they have the authority to suspend work in an area or with equipment if required safety standards and/or safe work practice are being violated.
Coordinate safety inspections with regulatory agencies (primarily MSHA), in addition to Management and Labor unions. Accompany inspectors on all inspections and report proceedings of inspection activities, including following up to ensure any discrepancies are addressed and corrected, and closing out meetings after inspections.
Maintain and administer current Safety Incentive Programs and develop new programs as needed. Maintain continued interest in safety by promoting safety through communications.
Respond to emergencies as necessary, including off shifts, holidays, and weekends. Record reports of injury and arrange for medical treatment and transportation if required. Arrange for light duty work of injured employee and monitor their return to work. Report injuries to the Worker Compensation carrier and MSHA as necessary. Assist with workman's compensation cases, reporting, testifying etc
Develop/maintain an Industrial Hygiene Sampling Program to be compliant with MSHA/OSHA regs. (Noise, Dust, DPM and Welding Fume) and advise all plant management nationwide on compliance issues. Maintain proficiency in the use of instruments used for health monitoring in the work place. Take periodic samples to ensure compliance with standards.
Develop and maintain monthly reports for the Safety Department. Data management required.
Develop and conduct OSHA and MSHA training as necessary. Develop and conduct additional safety training programs as necessary.
