Summary The Safety Manager is responsible for implementing and sustaining the facility Health and Safety management programs, managing the health and safety activities for the Kansas and Rochester plant to ensure regulatory compliance, and protecting human health and the environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Program Administration

  • Design, review and update as needed existing health and safety programs to ensure compliance with state, local, and federal rules.
  • Evaluate and assess safety program effectiveness. Consult with managers, and supervisors to facilitate improved safety and health program performance.
  • Analyze illness and injury data and work operations to develop preventative safety procedures and solve safety issues.
  • Chair the Safety Committee and coordinate all Safety Committee activities.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with state and federal OSHA agencies and acts as the Company’s liaison with these organizations.
  • Handle all OSHA inspections; leads discussions with OSHA regarding final citation language, abatement requirements and dates as well as related penalties.
  • Monitor state and federal safety guidelines and adapts company policies to match.
  • Maintain the accident records and files in support of the annual OSHA 300 log and any other OSHA requirement.
  • Effectively track and report all employee illness and injury report statistics, matrices and report data.
  • Provide management with monthly and annual occupational health and safety reports.
  • Responsible for the Hazard Communication program including the SDS database and binders.
  • Responsible for the Hearing Protection Program and setting up annual baseline audiogram with outside mobile vendor.

Inspection and Prevention

  • Develop and implement inspection policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, local laws, rules and procedures.
  • Develop a Safety Internal Audit Checklist to comply with OSHA standards.
  • Schedule routine inspections.
  • Conduct plant health and safety inspections to identify existing or potential accident and health hazards.
  • Draft inspection reports to document inspection findings, reports hazards to the plant management team and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Conduct accident investigations with supervisors to determine cause and recommend preventive actions.

Claims Management

  • Manage employee illness and injuries.
  • Manage workers compensation claims from the initial incident through claim finalization and closure.
  • Work closely with HR and claim management representatives to ensure effective claim management.
  • Coordinate injured workers' return to work with HR and plant management.

Training

  • Design and conduct periodic and annual safety training programs to prevent, correct or control unsafe environmental conditions.
  • Design and issue monthly Safety Talks to supervisors for department meetings.
  • Conduct the safety training portion of the new hire orientation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises one employee in the Safety department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in safety, health, industrial hygiene, related field or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and equivalent professional experience.

A minimum of 5 years of increasing experience in a manufacturing setting, preferably food manufacturing.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Human Resource systems; Internet software; Manufacturing software; Payroll systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. and PowerPoint). Knowledge of Alchemy Training Systems a plus.

OSHA Certification

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal OSHA standards.
  • Bilingual in Spanish desired but not required.
  • Solid ability to train, influence, and motivate team members.
  • Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration, boilers and wastewater.
  • Strong sense of urgency combined with the ability to collaborate and influence others.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills including the ability to correspond verbally and in writing with regulatory agencies, management, and operations personnel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in building effective relationships within an organization, as well as with outside agencies.
  • Ability to handle and resolve most issues independently.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • High work capacity, dependable, results oriented and strong sense of urgency.
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and prioritize work accordingly.
  • Must complete projects with minimum or no supervision and have good interpersonal skills and leadership characteristics.
