Position SummaryThe Respiratory Therapist, initiates and manages various types of respiratory equipment, as well as administering medication and other respiratory therapies in the treatment of patients with cardiopulmonary related illnesses (under the order of a physician). They are also responsible for evaluating, educating, and assisting in the development of a care plan for these patients.

The following Job Responsibilities / Duties are intended to describe the general nature of the responsibilities and duties associated with this position. The responsibilities and duties of this position are subject to change at any time.- Assess, treat, and provide care for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner.
- Set up, operate, and evaluate the effectiveness of various types of respiratory equipment under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner. These may include low and high flow oxygen administration devices, small and large volume nebulizers, CPAP / BiPAP equipment, and mechanical ventilators.
- Administers a variety of inhaled medication via small volume nebulizers or metered dose inhalers as ordered by a physician. Able to monitor the patient’s response to treatment, including vital signs, breath sounds, pulse oximetry, and differentiate between expected and unexpected patient responses.
- Performs various forms of bronchopulmonary drainage and mucus clearance therapies. These may include postural drainage with percussion or vibration, chest vest therapy, PEP therapy, as well as accapella and flutter valve therapy.
- Able to draw and interpret arterial blood gases after completing training under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner.
- Performs numerous types of diagnostic testing – pulse oximetry, bedside spirometry, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, and carbon monoxide monitoring.
- Performs electrocardiograms in the emergency room, on the inpatient floors, and on outpatients, after having completed training.
- Functions as an integral part of the health care team, communicating effectively with all other staff members to insure continuity of patient care.
- Documents all patient care activity in a concise, accurate and timely manner in the patient’s medical record.
- Performs all other duties as assigned
