Stanford Nursing Research
The Office of Research conducts studies on the process and outcomes of care delivered by nurses and patient care services professionals. This involves collaboration with clinical staff in research development, implementation, analysis, and dissemination. The Office of Research closely works with Nursing Excellence in supporting nursing inquiry as part of the Magnet journey.

Clinical Trial Facilitation
The Office of Research (ORPCS) supports and facilitates clinical trials in partnership with Stanford University School of Medicine (SOM). It involves ensuring nursing engagement in the administrative oversight of the study and protection of human subjects. Working in conjunction with a transdisciplinary team and hospital-wide stakeholders, the Office of Research fosters collaboration amongst Patient Care Services (PCS) departments and Physician-led clinical trials and research studies from the SOM. In supporting clinical trials, the ORPCS team assist by providing oversight and direction with an assembly of operational components including:

  • Trial intake, review, and facilitation
  • Appropriate study placement
  • Staffing considerations
  • Training and education
  • Financial oversight for PCS
  • Help maintain research integrity and patient safety
  • General operational oversight

A Brief Overview
The Research Scientist is accountable for the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of innovative research programs using scientific models, methods and concepts that support and promote the conduct of clinical research, research utilization, and professional development to improve organizational systems and health outcomes for those receiving patient care. The Research Scientist assumes a complex leadership and consulting role as an expert to mentor nurses and other healthcare providers in the conduct, dissemination, integration, and application of research to improve patient care. S/he provides leadership in research programs related to complex healthcare issues that affect the hospital's mission, health care, and policy development.

What you will do
  • Accepts substantial and continuing responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating an integrated research program in areas as assigned by the Director.
  • Collaborates with the Director to create and sustain the research mission and vision and to promote the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based patient care.
  • Serves as a facilitator, advisor, and consultant to nurses and other healthcare providers in matters related to research and research utilization.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across disciplines regarding the conduct of research and utilization of research findings in practice and education.
  • Coordinates and participates in a variety of complex activities including the collection, compilation, documentation and analysis of clinical research data. Assists the Director in the determination of guidelines for the collection of clinical data and/or administration of clinical studies.
  • Coordinates and implements procedures to collect data from patient charts, medical records, interviews, questionnaires, diagnostic tests and other sources; code, evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare appropriate documentation; obtain blood samples, cultures, tissues and other specimens for laboratory analysis as needed. Ensures compliance with protocol guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies; identifies problems and/or inconsistencies and monitors patients' progress to include documentation and reporting of adverse events; recommends corrective action as appropriate.
  • Evaluates and interprets collected clinical data in conjunction with principal investigator(s) as appropriate; prepares oral presentations or written reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Collaborates on the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Coordinates the development of forms, questionnaires and the application of research techniques; assist in writing procedures manuals for data collection and coding. Reviews journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and trends in clinical research, evidence-based practice, and research utilization as well as to obtain information regarding previous studies to aid in the planning of new studies.
  • Develops avenues for professional achievement of patient care staff and leaders to include publishing, presentations, certification and advanced education.
  • Assists in the development of education programs and staff development related to research and research-related activities.
  • Promotes the recognition of research-related accomplishments and achievements by employees.
  • Identifies and pursues funding opportunities in support of innovation and research both independently and collaboratively.
  • Creates and sustains an environment that facilitates the integration of clinical research to improve the delivery of patient care and professional standards for healthcare providers.
  • Provides guidance to clinical staff involved in planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical studies; assists in training and orienting new personnel.
  • Performs other related and incidental duties as needed/required.

Education Qualifications
  • PhD  PHD IN CLINICAL SCIENCES, HEALTH/LIFE SCIENCES, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, BIOTECHNOLOGY, HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY OR OTHER RELATED LIFE SCIENCES FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY

Experience Qualifications
  • FIVE (5) YEARS OF DIRECTLY RELATED CLINICAL AND/OR HEALTH CARE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques and approaches in patient care, and the health care system, and the responsibility and accountability for the outcome of practice.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of patient care.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use scientific research models, concepts, theories and methodologies, particularly as they relate to evidence-based practice.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use principles and practices of ethics in medical research.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use biostatistics.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use medical research laboratory practices.
  • Knowledge, understanding and the ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite business applications as well as (or ability to quickly learn and become proficient with) database and clinical, statistical, and healthcare applications used in support of patient care delivery and clinical research.
  • Ability to work independently and produce results in an unstructured environment.
  • Ability to establish a leadership role in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with patients, clinical staff, and university employees

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $81.45 - $107.92 per hour
