The Center for American Indian Health (CAIH) is located in Gallup, New Mexico - CAIANH with research and community partner project sites across the Southwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States. Our mission is to work in partnership with Native Nations to raise the health status, self-sufficiency and health leadership of Native American peoples to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: research, service, and training.

The CAIH is seeking an experienced, motivated Research Program Manager to work as a full-time member within its Infectious Disease team. This is a multi-faceted position that will manage opearational activities and human resources of the Infectious Disease Team. This position will be based at or in close proximity to one of the ID Team worksites in Arizona or New Mexico.

The CAIH Infectious Disease team works with Native American communities to conduct research aimed at reducing infectious disease disparities of high priority to the tribal communities we work with. Projects include disease surveillance, clinical trials, and evaluations of the impact of interventions. The successful candidate for this position will be part of a team that includes Masters- and PhD-trained epidemiologists and study physicians, nurses and research assistants who are based at different sites.

The Research Program Manager will be a core member of CAIH Infectious Disease leadership team and will oversee public health research activities. In addition, this position will support administrative and operations activites. The Research Program Manager will report to the Director of the Infectious Disease Program. Successful candidates for this position include those who can both work independently and remain committed to and accountable to a team, demonstrate flexibility, and provide leadership.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Direct the day-to-day programmatic operations of the Infectious Disease Team

Oversee the implementation of research protocols for multiple studies

Create study materials (e.g., consent documents, case report forms)

Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures, including training and monitoring compliance

Maintain a detailed knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements

Work with Director(s) and faculty to plan and manage space to ensure optimum utilization

Troubleshoot and address concerns or issues for CAIH Infectious Disease Team faculty and staff

Determine and implement solutions to routine human resources and administrative challenges involving faculty and staff

Directly supervise 3-6 Site Leads

Assist with Site level activities as needed

Liaise with community stakeholders and partner organizations

Present information on proposed studies and results of studies in community events, as needed

Provide oversight for study conduct

Perform QA/QC checks to evaluate data collection, data entry, specimen processing, etc.

Support system for specimen storage in the Baltimore and Whiteriver labs

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in related discipline

5 years related experience of working in community-based research or public health programs

Demonstrated supervisory or lead responsibilities.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

Knowledge of the health and social issues facing Native American populations

Demonstrated success serving in a leadership role

Willingness to work in a diverse cultural setting in a rural area

  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in related discipline

Experience working on clinical trials and familiarity with Good Clinical Practice

Physical Requirements:
Work may equire transporting and setting up study-specific equipment

Additional Requirements:
Current driver's license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required

Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed

Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required

This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies
