Purpose: The Research Coordinator position is responsible for coordinating the research work of the appropriate division/geography to which they have been assigned. The Research Coordinator is responsible for supervising international research staff, driving significant pieces of the campaign research, and working with appropriate Locals to develop their research capacity through coordination on local-level research pieces. The Research Coordinator will work with the SEIU Property Services Division on the airports campaign, which has successfully organized over 35,000 contracted airport services workers across the U.S.

Primary Responsibilities: The Research Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Recruiting, training, evaluating, supervising, and supporting the work of research staff with similar division/geographic assignments; providing leadership to research staff, both international and local and assuring that plans and work assignments are consistent with the organizing and political goals of SEIU.
  • Working with International Union research staff in the development of effective national organizing and political campaigns.
  • Providing ongoing support to Division Organizers/Coordinators.
  • Assisting with the direct implementation of national programs and mobilizations that support organizing, including working with leaders and union staff to develop organizing strategies.
  • Assisting in the creation of Local union research networks that support organizing/political work in the Local unions.
  • Providing research assistance to SEIU State councils for legislation, regulations, and other political activity.
  • Providing policy/funding analysis to support organizing strategies.
  • Providing education and training of International and Local staff on research, policy, and industry issues related to organizing and bargaining.
  • Working with employers and industry officials on policy or workplace issues.
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of the work of the department.

Contacts: Elected leadership. Local union leaders, staff, and members. International Union staff and officers. State federation and central labor council leaders and staff, staff of other unions, public officials and key staff. Leaders and counterparts in targeted industries and employers. Leaders and staff of other organizations who work with SEIU.

Direction and Decision Making: Reports to the Division Assistant Research Director and Division Campaign Coordinator/Deputy Director as appropriate. Must work without a high degree of supervision and have the ability to manage their own work and the work of others. Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently. Must use a high level of judgment and discretion in resolving problems within SEIU, the Division, and our Locals. Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or a combination of experience and education that will allow for the development of research/campaign support which support SEIU goals and objectives. A minimum of 3-5 years of campaign experience in a social justice setting is required.

Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of unions or other advocacy organizations and has demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Must be able to handle multiple priority projects simultaneously and set and meet deadlines, and if leading a group or team, ensure they do the same. Works well under pressure.

Physical Requirements: Work in this position will generally be performed in a remote setting. However, the job may require work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for some travel, including overnight stays. Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required.
