The Aerospace Center through a project called the Aerospace and Defense Innovation Network for Manufacturers is building up a portfolio of innovation services to support the growth of small and medium manufacturers into aerospace and defense markets. This position will be assigned to this project. Under the general supervision and with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs moderately complex specialized research projects to support local industry in aerospace, defense and advanced manufacturing. May supervise the work of others.

Essential Functions


Contributes to one or more of the following areas: Small Satellite Development, Hypersonics, Energy Systems, and Combustion & Propulsion. Also, the application of Digital Engineering, Material at Extremes, Composite Materials, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Additive Manufacturing to support Aerospace & Energy Systems.

Responsible for working with local manufacturers on design challenges that help them improve a product or improve their efficiency and competitiveness.

Responsible for ensuring the quality deployment of services and support to manufacturers and for ensuring that these services result in a return on investment

Responsible for creating and managing a design and prototyping lab to support local manufacturers.

Responsible for keeping up to date on all trends in advanced manufacturing and digital transformation and for updating programs and supports to reflect trends that will strengthen our local manufacturing base.

Works efficiently and effectively in a team-working environment as well as oversee teams working on the project as required.

Responsible for timely support to manufacturers that results in better products and improved efficiency and competitiveness.

Operates equipment, including but not limited to, powder handling, machine set up, part removal, post processing, and documentation of the work.

Drives the development of standard operation procedures (SOPs) for elements related to area of expertise.

Operates materials testing and/or characterization equipment, analyzes data obtained, and interprets such data for publications, presentations, or other relevant communications.

Helps monitor equipment and software maintenance, ensuring it is up to date so that equipment is operational at all times. Identifies when something is not right with system/equipment and works towards resolving the issue.

Interfaces regularly with the Center Manager and Aerospace Center directors to provide updates on project progress.

Mentors Aerospace Center students by training them in equipment operation, data analysis, communication, and providing career mentoring as needed. Supervises student participation.

Creates presentations, publications, and technical reports based on research findings and relays such information to the funding agency or to colleagues in a way that can be understood.

Participates in the development of curriculum as needed.

Conducts, monitors, and analyzes research projects and data.

Uses statistical methods for the relational databases to analyze data sets.

Prepares reports of research findings.

Conducts data-gathering interviews/tests.

Authors or edits technical reports and summaries of findings.

Assists with planning, developing, coordinating, and administering research projects.

Assists with formulating research objectives, programs, and priorities.

May assist in designing and creating computer programs for research applications.

May trains users on the operation and data management of research equipment.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

Travel is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education required: Master’s degree in relevant field

Minimum Experience required: No minimum experience required.

Knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis, of measurement, testing, and evaluation, and of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies.

Skilled in conducting qualitative and quantitative research and in using computers, software, and statistical tools and programs.

Ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects, evaluate research data, ensure the development of measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity, interpret and publish research findings, and communicate effectively. Experience working in industry is desired but not required.
