Charleston Oncology is a fast paced, high volume oncology practice that focuses on the very highest quality patient care delivered by knowledgeable, experienced and caring staff; the position floats through all 5 of Charleston Oncology offices in the Tri-County area: West Ashley, Downtown Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and Carnes Crossroads; the position is for Monday through Friday and is off on all major holidays.
Job Summary
The Infusion RN is a full time non-exempt position that utilizes the nursing process to provide care for oncology patients at Charleston Oncology; answers directly to the Oncology Director of Nursing; travels to all Charleston Oncology locations from the West Ashley office to the Downtown, Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and Carnes Crossroads offices; complies with the oncology RN competencies and provides the highest quality of patient care in person, over the telephone or by other electronic communication media; utilizes the knowledge, skill, judgment and critical thinking that are inherent in nursing education; responsible for medication administration, scheduling, patient education, and billing; documents all patient care in appropriate record and charge for all drugs and their infusion times; assesses, plans, treats, and evaluates care for patients; assists physicians in invasive procedures, including conscious sedation for patients undergoing bone marrow biopsies; provide assistance in the physician exam area when RN skills are needed; may assist in mixing chemotherapy drugs; ensures a safe, secure and healthy work environment by following, enforcing and complying with all standards, procedures and legal regulations; ensures patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential; completes annual Healthicity training courses on time; complies with HIPAA and OSHA requirements, adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local regulations; performs other essential functions as directed.
Responsibilities and Duties

- Reports to work and ready to begin providing patient care at 8:30 AM every morning; travels to all Charleston Oncology locations from the West Ashley office to the Downtown, Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and Carnes Crossroads offices; follows practice call-out procedures; provides at least 30 days’ notice for scheduled vacation or other time away from the practice; has less than 5 tardiness’s in a rating period; establishes relationships to build trust; respects and demonstrates effective teamwork and care with staff; takes responsibility for his own actions.
- Thinks carefully about the likely effect on others of one’s words, actions, appearance, and behaviors; maintains emotional control when faced with opposition, pressure, hostility, and stressful conditions from others; provides compassionate, appropriate, and effective care that increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes of treatments by the providers; demonstrates high level of dependability in all aspects of the job and personal abilities.
- Assists physician with bone marrow biopsies, providing IV sedation and monitoring throughout procedure; access and provides care for ports as needed, start PIV’s for infusion and CT’s.
- Ensures physician orders are taken accurately and followed in a timely manner; communicates appropriate patient information to the Physician and/or PA, NP; documents pertinent patient information, actions taken, and physician orders in the medical record.
- Incorporates principles of infection control, as well as patient safety in nursing practice; provides accurate and timely medication administration following appropriate procedures and protocols.
- Adheres to narcotic control policies and procedures; assesses and responds appropriately to changes in patient conditions; and plans, provides, and documents patient and/or family education.
- Provides for psychosocial needs of the patients, contacting appropriate disciplines as needed; handles and disposes biohazardous materials per protocol; ensures all supplies such as IV tubing, fluids, IV trays, and port drawing areas are restocked.
- Ensures emergency equipment is checked on routine basis; maintains strict confidentiality; checks approval for all drugs ordered and ensures that all charges are correct in the medical record, as well as in the drug dispensing machine.
- Ensures patients are scheduled properly for their infusion and injections; may have to care for a patient that is paying to use the DigniCap machine; follows QOPI requirements.
- Ensures a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, enforcing and complying with all standards, procedures and legal regulations; ensures patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential; complies with HIPAA and OSHA requirements, adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local regulations.
- Performs other essential functions as directed.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional Nursing, possessing at a minimum an ADN degree.
- Must possess a current and valid South Carolina Registered Nurse License.
- Preferred certifications are: Oncology Certification from the Oncology Nursing Society and Certification in Chemotherapy/Biotherapy.
Experience
- Preferred at 2+ years experience as an RN in an Oncology practice or 1 year experience in a medical practice as an RN.
Skills
- Ability to possess the sense of discipline to work in accordance with accepted clinic standards; capable of communicating tactfully and effectively with patients, family members and all co-workers.
- Knowledge of all relevant federal, state and local laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, OSHA, ADA, ACA, etc.; attentive to detail; ability to work in a team environment with a sense of urgency and in stressful situations.
